About Ebola

1.Ebola virus disease (EVD), formerly


known as Ebola hemorrhagic fever, is a
severe, often fatal illness in humans.
2.The virus is transmitted to people from
wild animals and spreads in the human
population through human-to-human
transmission.
3.The first EVD outbreaks occurred in
remote villages in Central Africa, near
tropical rainforests, but the most recent
outbreak in west Africa has involved
major urban as well as rural areas.
4.Community engagement is key to
successfully controlling outbreaks.
5.Early supportive care with rehydration,
symptomatic treatment improves
survival. There is as yet no licensed
treatment proven to neutralize the virus
but a range of blood, immunological and
drug therapies are under development.

Is Ebola Dying Down?


Efforts to tackle Ebola have been hindered by fierce resistance from local
communities with a history of suspicion towards outside intervention.
This has enabled new chains of transmission to pop up.
There was a slight increase in cases at the beginning of February, after they
began to fall in January.
Guinea recorded almost 100 new cases in the week ending 15 March. But that
had dropped to 21 in the week ending 5 April.
The WHO said the number of confirmed cases now being reported was the lowest
since May 2014.
Health officials are anxious to end the outbreak in as wide an area as possible,
especially in remote places, which will become difficult to access once the rainy
season starts.
