Android
is a Linux-based
mobile operating system, which
is basically the software that runs on
a number of mobile devices, generally
smartphones and tablets. The Android
operating system has been developed by Google and
a collaboration of companies, both mobile device
manufadurers and mobile carriers, called the Open
Handset Alliance (OHA).
According to the OHA, its aim is to enable everyone
in the mobile industry to "innovate more rapidly and
respond better to consumers' demands".
Because Android is an open source software platform,
which means that anyone can use it without having to
pay. multiple manufadurers produce Android phones
(e.g. Samsung,Motorola, Sony.HTC).
The Android platform differs from the closed source
software platform of competitors such as Apple's iOS
and the BlackBerry OS, as both Apple and RIM (Research
In Motion) build their own software and hardware.
Any Android phone comes pre-Ioaded with a range of
Google services including Google Search, Gmail, Google
Maps, Google Earth, Google Calendar, Google Latitude
and YouTube. It also comes with a mobile web browser,
which allows you to access and navigate the Internet on
your phone wherever and whenever you are, provided
you have mobile coverage and an appropriate data pian.
Because Android is an open source piece of software,
Google adively encourages manufadurers to make basic
changes to the look and feel of the user interface. This
means that the interface of an Android phone from one
manufadurerwilllook
and feel different from the Android
phone made by another manufadurer, despite the fad
