The Holodomor was a man-made famine in Soviet Ukraine between 1932-1933 that killed millions. Stalin implemented a program of collectivization in 1928 that forced Ukrainian farmers to join collective farms, against their will. In 1929, Stalin declared wealthy farmers, or "kulaks", as class enemies and had many killed or deported. By 1930 over 1.5 million farmers had been killed or deported from their land. To punish Ukraine, Stalin raised quotas for grain in 1932-1933, causing mass starvation. He also blocked food aid and imposed draconian penalties, including execution, for anyone stealing or transporting food. By 1933-1934, an estimated 4 million Ukrainians had died from starvation or deportation in the Holodomor genocide.

Holodomor Genocide

By Nick Frank
History 12
Holodomor refers to the artificial famine that Stalin created in Soviet Ukraine and other
places with a Ukrainian ethnicity between 1932-1933. Holodomor can also be used to describe
the entire genocide that started in 1929. There were deadly deportations of rich farmers in
Ukraine call the Kurkuls as well as executions and deportations of religious and cultural leaders.
The genocide climaxed with the famine Stalin imposed. The death toll of the in its infancy
famine reached the millions and many innocent lives were claimed. The famine continued for
several more years and destroyed Ukraine's political leadership. On top of that, anybody that
spoke publicly about the famine were prosecuted.

Time line
1928
Stalin implements a program that forces farmers to give up their private land, equipment, and
farm animals, to join factory like collective farms. Stalins reasoning behind this was that the
collective farms would feed the workers in the city and also help make money by selling good to
foreign countries. He would then use this money to finance his plans for industrialization.

1929
A lot of the ukraine farmers didn't want to join stalins collective farms and wanted to stay
independent. Mostly because they thought it would be like the serfdom of earlier centuries.
Stalin makes the policy of class warfare in the countryside to try and force people to join the
collective farms. The rich farmers or Kurkuls are labeled as class enemies. This is enforced by
regular troops and secret police. They are ordered to liquidate them as a class and eventually
everyone who tries to resist the collective farms are considered Kurkuls.

1930
1.5 million farmers are killed because of this and armed forces start to confiscate land, livestock,
property and evict entire families. It is estimated that nearly half a million people are dragged
from their homes and put onto trains and ship to uninhabited areas without food or water. Most
of the people, especially the children, die before they even get there.
1932-1933
To ensure that everyone in Ukraine meets the same fate as those on the trains, Stalin drastically
raises the amount of good Ukraine needs to give up, causing mass starvation across the
Ukraine. People began to steal food from the collective farms to eat, so Stalin implements a
decree that states that anyone, even children, caught stealing as little as a single stock of wheat

from the place he works is to be executed. Stalin even puts up military blockades around
villages to prevent the transportation of food to the Ukrainian people and catch anyone with
stashed food.
1933
People were dying by the tens of thousands with almost a third of the people being children
under ten. by 1934 there were an estimated death toll of four million from starvation. This is
without adding in deportations, executions or normal deaths. Stalin denied the famine to the
world and it is assumed that he had more than enough food to save every last person in the
ukraine if he wanted.

On november 28th 2006, The Parliament of Ukraine passed a decree defining the
Holodomor as an Act of Genocide. The russian government however claims that the Ukraines
depiction of the Holodomor a one-sided falsification of history. However it is recognized as a
genocide by two dozen nations.
