Choke Performance

This document discusses choke performance in controlling well flow rates. Chokes are used to limit drawdown at the sandface to prevent issues like sand production or formation collapse. Chokes can be fixed, adjustable, or remotely controlled. Flow rates through chokes in single-phase flow can be calculated using the choke diameter and discharge coefficient, while multiphase flow rates depend on factors like the upstream pressure, liquid flow rate, choke diameter, and gas-liquid ratio. Choke performance is illustrated with curves showing the relationship between wellhead pressure, choke size, and flow rates.

Chokes

Primary purpose:

Control well flow rate

Why restrict the flow rate?

Limit the drawdown at the sandface

Prevent sand production

Prevent failure of sand screens

Prevent collapse of the formation

- Prevent coning of gas or water

- For reservoir management
- Government regulations
-

Reduce fluid pressure (High pressure wells)

Fixed, adjustable or remote controlled types

Single phase (liquid) flow

Q = C * CD * D2
:-Where
C
D

PU- PD

= the flow discharge coefficient through the choke

= a constant depending on the units employed and

= the density

The choke manufacturer normally supplies a choke performance

chart or correlation that relates the discharge coefficient (CD) to
the diameter of the choke (D2) and the Reynolds number.

(except for Ros who uses the unit psia)

QL

= the liquid flow rate (Stb/d)

D64

= the choke diameter (64th of an inch)

= the gas / liquid ratio (scf/STB) and
