Optics Problems for Physics Students

A monochromatic beam of light is incident on two parallel glass plates that each reflect 25% of the incident light. This creates an interference pattern between the beams. The ratio between the minimum and maximum light intensities in the interference pattern needs to be calculated. Two parallel beams of different wavelengths are incident on a prism. The refractive index of the prism depends on wavelength. The value of a constant must be found such that the condition for total internal reflection is satisfied for one wavelength but not the other. The intensities at the focus when the transmitted beams from the prism are brought to a focus using a converging lens must be calculated.

100. A narrow monochromatic beam of light intensity I is incident on a glass plate as shown in figure. Another
identical glass is kept close to the first one and parallel to it. Each glass plate reflects 25 percent of the light
incident on it and transmits the remaining. Find the ratio of the minimum and the maximum
intensities in the interference pattren formed by the two beams obtained after one reflection at each palte.
