(a) Burning of paper
(b) Melting of butter
(c) Germination of seed
(d) Passing electric current through water
(e) Dissolving common salt
ANS 1: (a) chemical
(b)physical
(c)chemical
(d) chemical
(e) physical
Q2: Name the technique to separate the following:
(a) Cream from milk
(b) Dye from black ink
(c) Alcohol from water
(d) Pure copper sulphate from impure sample
(e) Components of blood
ANS2: (a) centrifugation
(b) chromatography
(c)fractional distillation
(d) crystallization
(e) chromatography/centrifugation
Q3: Differentiate between the following :
(a) Metals and Non-metals

(b) Compounds and mixtures

(c) True solution ,colloid &suspension
(d) Physical &chemical changes
ANS3: REFER N.C.E.R.T BOOK
Q4: Explain the water purification system in water works with the help of diagram.
ANS4: 1.Explaining the following steps:
a.sedimentation in sedimentation tank
b. process of loading in loading tank
c. filtration in filtration tank
d.chlorination of water
consult N.C.E.R.T for diagram
Q5: 0.5 g of salt is dissolved in 25 g of water. Calculate the percentage amount of the salt in
the solution.
ANS5: Mass of solute =0.5g
Mass of solvent=25g
Concentration of solution =(MASS OF SOLUTE)/(MASS OF SOLUTION )*100
=0.5/25.5*100
=100/51%
Q6: Draw a flow diagram of the process involved in obtaining gases like nitrogen, oxygen, argon
from air.
Ans 6: Refer N.C.E.R.T FOR DIAGRAM
Q7: What is the basic difference between simple distillation & fractional distillation?
ANS 7: TO separate miscible liquids :
If the difference between the boiling points of the liquid is greater than 25 k then we employ
simple distillation otherwise fractional distillation.
Q8: Why crystallization is preferred over evaporation?
ANS 8: Evaporation results in decomposition of the substance or charring of the sugar on
evaporation whereas crystallization involves formation of saturated solution first.
