SUMMER EXPOSURES OF TYNEMOUTH PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY

DEVELOPED AT CAMERA HOUSE, FRONT STREET, TYNEMOUTH

NUMBER 326

JUNE 2015

CHEAP AS CHIPS

Presidential:

It was a great pleasure to begin my term as President by announcing the fabulous

catalogue of external awards which the Club has won over the year. I am assured, by my
elders and betters (Stan and Howard!), that we have not seen the like for a very long
time. So, well done to all those who helped secure the roll of honours and thank you
very much for all your efforts.
Congratulations too, to all those members who received awards and trophies at our
Presentation evening in May. The Seasonal Competitions always provide a wide range of
subject material and this year the quality of prints and PDIs has been outstanding. It is
not surprising that there were a great many complimentary comments made by the
members of the public who viewed the Annual Exhibition at the Club Rooms. The
standard of prints on show was extremely high and if you missed seeing the display do
try to catch it as it tours the local libraries between now and Christmas.
Nothing like beginning my term of office on a high....the only trouble is trying to maintain
that dizzy height! Still, I am sure that all you talented and imaginative photographers
have already begun to embrace the Presidents Trophy for 2016, which was announced
at the AGM and the resulting shots, will be stunning.
The title is ADVERSE CAMBER. If you Google it or run it through the thesaurus on
your computer you will come up with the following definition

Adverse camber refers to any road that tilts on the same side that a vehicle leans to on
a road

However, I am going for a much more relaxed

interpretation meaning anything that is opposing
or contrary to the norm.
In other words, any colour or mono images of things
that are bent, arced, inclined, sloped or pitched in
an unusual manner.

Here is one of mine to get you thinking.....

Good luck and happy hunting.

Sarah

Editorial:
Here we are again - again - bringing you all the recent happenings and a programme for the summer.
After an excellent year - of which more later - we are hoping that you have an equally productive break.
Your committee is concerned at our membership numbers and also the falloff in numbers attending towards
the end of the season. If you have any ideas regarding this, please let any member of the committee know.
Sarah is preparing a flyer to distribute locally and if you would like to give her any thoughts on what to include,
please speak to her direct.
With regard to us attending Ellesmere Port for the National Print Championships, we will need lots of good
impact prints to choose from at the start of the season so printers keep working at it if you can and have your
best work available please. If you fancy attending the event, please let Howard know so that he can get you a
ticket when they become available.

Presentation Evening:
A very convivial evening was had by all and it was good of the Chair of N Tyneside Council, Cllr Tommy
Mulvenna to attend, say some very nice things about the club, our members and our work, before opening the
Exhibition. Cliff Banks, the Federation President was also very complimentary and presented the trophies.

Several visitors also commented on the good prints, good food and good company.
Thank you to anyone who contributed in any way to the evening.
Below are three pictures of our officers - the first time they have been all female. (Jennifer collected trophies on
behalf of Robin Sinton.)

Some of us were surprised to get home that night and find something similar to below on our doomat.

Here are two photographs of (The) Robins' victory Parade. Would you believe it, they showed off the 'FA Vase'
for a football match and not the 'Wilson Vase' for best landscape picture. Or indeed the Fox Talbot trophy.
What a surprise.

The Exhibition was judged ,this year by Peter Dixon of Whickham PC. It was open to the public on the

External Competitions:We have had a particularly successful season in 2014 - 15. Howard's external comp sec report, from the AGM,
and with a few additions, lists all of our successes and is appended at the end of this Film Pack. We should
deservedly congratulate ourselves and all successful individuals as well.
We have three Federation trophies. Two are 'coming home'. The Bewick and the Hylton. (Explanation next
month.)
Below you can see Arthur's winning picture for the Grier Trophy, 'City of Dreams' and John's 'Steel Wheels at

Addendum

Annual Report of the External Competitions Secretary 2015 ( with additions)

This has been a particularly busy and satisfying year for Tynemouth in interclub and external competitions.
The NCPF International Salon comes along right at the start of our season
Several members individually enter this every September. Two members had successes this time. In Prints,
Stan's 'Glacier at Magdelene Fjord' was accepted.
In the PDI section, John Mc Guinness's 'Angel Eyes' and 'Winter in Middleton on Tees' were accepted. Johns
'Angel Eyes' PDI entry also won him the Northumbria Trophy for the Best Creative Image from an NCPF
entrant. Well done to Stan and congratulations to John.
North Tyne Area Print Competition. November 2014
This competition was hosted by Gosforth and Keith Suddaby was the judge.
It was a good night and at the end Gosforth, North Shields and Tynemouth tied with top marks. The rules state
that the winner is then determined by subtracting the bottom mark of each winning club until a winner is found.
Gosforth were declared winners and Cramlington won the trophy for the best print. Arthur's 'City of Dreams'
was second top print, being awarded 29 marks. So we narrowly missed out on two counts.
Sunderland Gateshead Print Competition
This competition was hosted by Sunderland this season. The judge was Alan McCormick of Hexham. We won
for the first time in many, many years. Indeed none of us can remember when we last won. Larry's 'The Fox
Hat' was the top marked print.
Total marks for the 12 prints were - Tynemouth 324, Gateshead 317 and Sunderland 304.
NCPF Championships
Just as last year, the Championships were held at the Baptist Church, Gateshead. Because of the number of
clubs entering, a restriction on numbers of visitors per club had to be imposed.
In the Print section, we were joint winners with Northallerton and will be representing the Federation in the
Alliance Print Competition, to be held at Ellesmere Port on Sunday 25th October. We achieved 240 points with
our 12 prints. Also, Arthur's 'City of Dreams' was one of the top marked prints but eventually lost out to
another as THE best print.
In the PDI section we were placed joint 8th out of 22 and our top entry was Larry's 'Barn Owl'.
Northallerton and Durham will represent the Federation in the Alliance PDI Competition to be held at Warwick
University in the summer.
The North Tyne Area Projected Image Competition
This was held at Ponteland at the end of March and was judged by David Stout. I am very pleased to report
that we won, so the Evening Chronicle Trophy is back in its favourite place, on our wall. The best picture went
to Larry, with his 'Barn owl at Rest'.
Our total was 212, Cramlington 210.
The NCPF Annual Competitions
The results of this were published after the AGM. And we found that we had done rather well.
We had THREE pieces of really good news and other good news as well.
Colour Print Competition. Tynemouth PS won this!! - The Bewick Trophy. (Now I wonder who gave that
one?) Scores are 'Venice Dawn' Arthur 12, 'Red Deer Hind' John 11, 'Bamburgh Dawn' Robin 14, 'City of
Dreams' Arthur 14, 'Mountain View' Larry 13, 'Stokknes 2' Robin 14. Sunderland were 2nd.

'City of Dreams', 'Mountain View' and 'Stokknes 2' are also selected for the Portfolio. 'Bamburgh Dawn' and
'City of Dreams' are Highly Commended.
The Grier Trophy for the Best Creative Colour Print - goes to 'City of Dreams' by Arthur Smith.
The Hylton Trophy for the Best Creative PDI goes to 'Steel Wheels at Seaham' by John McGuinness.
Mono Prints we came 6th. Carlisle won. 'Winter View' by John, 'Off the Rails at Chemical Beach' by Larry and
'The Fox Hat' by Larry are Highly Commended while 'Winter View' by John is also selected for the Alliance
entry.
PDI - we came joint 7th. 'Steel Wheels at Seaham' scored 14. Larry's 'Vietnamese Mossy Frog' 13.
Beginners' Prints. 'Symmetry in Mud' by Graham Relf 13, Paul Myers' 'Sunset at Castle Stalker' 14 and
Highly Commended, Sarah Timney's 'Colour Printer' 13. Paul's 'Winter Scene at Rannoch Moor' 13.
Beginners PDI. Paul Myers' 'North and South' 13.
So, overall, we have had a very successful year, having reached the Print final at Ellesmere Port, achieving
joint top marks in the North Tyne Print Competition, winning the North Tyne Projected Image competition and
winning the Sunderland / Gateshead print competition. Plus John winning the Northumbria Trophy for Creative
PDI in the International Salon and Larry the Bonser Trophy for the top marked Projected Image in the North
Tyne competition.
We also congratulate Arthur and John, individually, on their successes and other members who achieved good
marks, HCs etc.
The trophies will be presented, we understand, on Sunday afternoon, 22nd November at the Torch Centre,
Hexham. A date for trophy winners and anyone else who cares to go along, to put in the diary now.
You can view all the results at http://www.ncpf.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/NCPF-2014-Annual-CompResults.pdf and the Awards Galley at http://www.ncpf.org.uk/?page_id=3791
or simply go to ncpf.org.uk and follow the links.
Detailed emails were sent out to all Thursday members following each of the above competitions.
Just two reminders or pleas. In the main we are praised by judges for the quality of presentation of our prints
but I have had to remount or repair a few individual prints before entering them this year. Please use good
quality proper tape on mounts. Also PLEASE keep a good record of what your work has been used for to help
prevent us falling foul of any rules. Comp Secs do their best but we are not infallible.
Also remember that the only work on an entry that is allowed by someone other than the author, is printing and
mounting.
We should all extend a big Thank you to the Selection Committee for their time and efforts. They have done a
good job this year.
But, of course, the main thanks must go to those members who are producing real quality work for us to select
from, for all these competitions. Thank you all.
Howard Wilson, External Competitions Secretary, May 2015
