MEC531 Assignment 1 NOV 2015

This document contains an assignment for designing a double wishbone suspension system. It provides input data such as component dimensions, material properties, and load specifications. It asks the student to (1) create a free body diagram and torque diagrams, (2) calculate the minimum safe size for the wheel shaft supporting a 50kN load, (3) select the suitable size of the lower arm based on pipe standards, and (4) calculate the pin size between the bracket and lower arm. References on mechanical engineering design and machine elements are also provided.

INTRODUCTION AND INPUT DATA

Assignment No 1: Suspension Design

The Figure 1 shows the dimensions of the double wishbone suspension system; where
the length of the components are shown in the drawing. For the wishbone design we
need a material that combines several properties such as the stiffness, toughness and
the ductility. The wheel size is about 305 mm, and friction between tyre or road is about
0.4.

The Attachment 1- Dual Phase Steels are recommended material for design

suspension components. The Attachment 2 Standard Pipe Wall Thickness for

ASTM Code. With the assumption that the radial load acting on the wheel shaft is
about 50 kN and the suspension absorber will move with the angle between 33 o to 36o,
please,
1. Determine the free body diagram and all necessary moment and torque diagrams for
the system.
2. Determine the safe wheel shaft size for support 50 kN load.
3. Select the suitable size of lower arm based on providing standard & code pipe
schedule.
4. Calculate the dimensions of the pin for the joint between bracket and lower arm.
