Historian

Australia has long been a culturally diverse society. When Europeans first settled in 1788, they encountered numerous Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples who already inhabited the land and had their own unique cultures. The gold rush of the 1850s dramatically increased immigration, bringing millions of people from around the world to settle in Australia. World War II further contributed to Australia's diversity, as over 5.6 million immigrants have since called Australia home to escape war or for other opportunities, including many after 1955 when immigration restrictions were eased.

HISTORIAN

According to research, Australia has always been a

multi-cultural society.
In 1788, when Europeans settled into Australia, they
noticed dozens of Aboriginals and Torres Strait
islanders. These natives had many cultures and all the
settlers meaning even more cultures to add onto
cultural diversity.
All the people who settled into Australia in the 18th
and 19th centuries were mainly from British Isle.
The gold rush in the 1850s brought millions of people
from around the world settling into Australia.
Since World War II, over 5.6 million immigrants now
call Australia their home. Today 4.1 per cent of
people living in Australia have said that they have
been born overseas or their parents have been.
The main reasons for migration were from the gold
rush which brought millions of people from different
countries. And from World War II that brought many
people for protection because Australia never had war
at that stage.

From 1855 Victoria had an anti-Chinese law that

restricted Chinese immigrants from digging up any
gold.
