Exercise Rate of Reaction

An experiment measured the rate of reaction between 20 cm3 of 0.5 mol dm-3 hydrochloric acid and excess calcium carbonate over 150 seconds. The volume of carbon dioxide produced increased over time, reaching 44 cm3 after 135 seconds. The average rate of reaction was fastest in the first minute at 0.45 cm3/s and slowed in the second minute to 0.25 cm3/s as the hydrochloric acid was consumed.

1. Write a chemical equation for the above reaction.

CaCO3 + 2HCl CaCl2 + H2O + CO2
2. State the observable and measurable changes in the experiment.
Increase in volume of carbon dioxide / decrease in mass of calcium carbonate
3. State the meaning of the rate of reaction for the above reaction.
Change in volume of carbon dioxde gas in one second / change in mass of calcium carbonate
in one second
4. Draw an apparatus set-up to measure rate of reaction in the given reaction.

water

Calcium carbonate

5. Draw the graph of the volume of carbon dioxide gas collected against time.
6. From the graph, determine:
(a) the average rate of reaction in the first minute.
=

= 0.45 cm3 s-1

(b) the average rate of reaction in the second minute.

=

4227

= 0.25 cm3 s-1

(c) the time when the reaction has completed.

135 s
(d) the average rate of reaction for overall reaction
=

44
135

= 0.326 cm3 s-1

(e) rate of reaction at 30 seconds.

= 0.405 + 0.1 cm3 s-1
(f) rate of reaction at 105 seconds.
= 0.217 + 0.1 cm3 s-1
7. Compare the rate of reaction at 30 seconds and 105 seconds. Explain your answer.
Rate of reaction at 30 seconds is higher than at 105 seconds because the concentration of
hydrochloric acid decreases as time increases.
