Interview with Miss Shaikha Al Shehhi
It will be the first time to do an interview with a person. So, I searched and read
about different topics such as how to interview people and classroom management
strategies. From searching and reading, I had great knowledge and background
about how to do interviews with people. Moreover, I planned different questions to
ask my MST. My MSTs name is Shaikha Al Shehhi; she was my teacher when I was a
student. Therefore, I want to learn from her and know more about her experience
and the strategies she used in her classroom. Moreover, she studied at Sharjah
Womens College. Also, she specialized teaching English to young learners, she
taught in Afra Bint Obaid school. Furthermore, she taught different grades such as,
grade four, five and now she is teaching grade one. The interview was on the
seventh of October on Wednesday at 10:00 A.M and it took two hours.
The interview started by greeting My MST.
Me: Good morning, Miss Shikha!. How are you?.
Miss Shaikha: Good morning dear. Im fine.
Me: Would you mind to do an interview with you and ask you various
questions about your experience in teaching and classroom management
strategies.
Miss Shaikha: if course. Im happy to do this interview.
Me: Ok, lets start. The first four questions will be personal questions and
about your experience in teaching.
Personal questions:
1. Where did you study and what did you specialize ?.
I studied at Sharjah Women's College; I specialized teaching English to young
learners (TEYL), the First batch!.
2. Why did you choose to be a teacher?
Because I had great teachers as a student and I wanted to be like them. Also, I want
to make differences in the UAE schools.
3. Can you describe the experience of having to teach a lesson for the
first time? What have you learned from this experience?
That was a long time ago. I remember it was during the first semester of my second
year in the program with grade one students. I was nervous at the beginning when

we started the games, my classroom management was horrible, but I managed it
with the help of my MST. Even though the classroom management was not great,
the students were engaged. I learned from this experience that classroom
management is the key to having a perfect environment and great students.
4. How do you think that your own perspectives on teaching and
learning have changed since the first year of teaching?
It changed a lot. During TP , the teaching was fun and easy. Moreover, we had a lot
of support from our college monitoring, and the resources were in abundance. Then
when I started teaching, it was still fun and easy, I was optimistic and motivated to
teach. The process was rewarding as I saw the outcomes of students at the end of
each year and it is still rewarding. My students and I always work together in the
class as a group with guiding and scaffolding them. But now I faced problem to
apply learning centers because the students attitude has changed and they rely
more on the teacher to give them the information. Also, being all the time with
them during lesson activities.
Lets move to the second parts which are classroom management
strategies.
5. Can you describe any behavior management strategies that worked
particularly well for you?
There are various strategies that worked well, such as, classroom rules, maintaining
a routine, rewarding system and ignoring bad behavior.
6. How do you deal with misbehavior?.
If its not something ethical and violent, I try to ignore it or tell the students
immediately what she do instead. Also, reward the good behavior, so they know
that their behavior was negative. Moreover, If a student disrupts the class or fails to
do the homework, she is not allowed to go out during the break. Moreover, If she
harms another student or do something that is really bad, the counseling will deal
with her behavior.
7. From your own personal experience which activities do you think
have a part to enhance students learning and increase the positive
behavior?
Mainly students centered and hands-on activities because they keep the students
busy. Songs, games and reading story books also increase their good behavior.
8. What are the rules , do you use it in your classroom?
Be ready (put their books and stationary on their desks)
Look at me (students look at me, fold their hands and sit properly)

9. What are the best ways to teach your students the rules?
I model the rules as I start each lesson. I reward the students who follow the rules
without being told or reminded.
10.
Do you agree that teachers have to use a reward system in
teaching? . And why?
Yes, because life is about getting rewards at the end. Moreover, according to
Skinner ,who believed that teachers have to reward the students for excellent
behavior. Therefore, students will repeat this behavior because they will link it with
the consequence.
11.
Some people say students misbehaved when they feel bored,
do you agree with them and why?.
Yes, because they are children! .It happens to me sometimes, and I cant blame
them. Sometimes the activities are boring, and they lose interest.
12.
What strategies do you use and worked well for managing the
transitions between activities?
I used various ways to manage the transition. First of all, I turned on the song, and it
is a sign to make a circle time. Moreover, I used a bell, and when students heard it,
they immediately stop doing the activity.
13.
How do you differentiate your teaching?
I used Worksheets with different levels. Moreover, games and activities that
can be made hard or easy depending on students level.
14.
What kind of language do you use in classroom for achieving
objectives?.
I used simple language to help my students to understand what I said. Sometimes I
translate for them by using Arabic because they faced problem to understand some
words and we as teachers have to that because English is their second language.
15.
From your opinion, who is responsible for students behavior?
I believe that both teachers and parents are responsible for students behavior.
Sometimes students ignore their teachers and dont follow what she wants, but they

listen and obey their parents. Moreover, teachers have to teach students positive
behavior to make them good learners with perfect manners.
16.
What personal targets would you set for trainer teacher in the
area of behavior management?
Set rules, start a routine and model it every single day until they do it on their own.
Me: Thank you for your time.
Miss Shaika: welcome.
