What Do I Want To Improve? How Will I Achieve This? When Will I

Courtney Denis' professional development plan outlines goals to improve accommodations for English Language Learners, students' understanding of expectations, and using extra time during lessons to enhance learning. To achieve these, Courtney plans to work with ESOL staff, provide extra support for ELL students, clearly define classroom procedures and expectations, and overplan lessons with additional activities. The plan is intended to guide Courtney's continuous growth through the teacher preparation program.

Courtney Denis

Date: 11/22/14

Directions: Your Professional Development Plan (PDP) serves as a guide toward continuous improvement during your
teacher preparation program. List specific competencies, skills and dispositions you would like to improve on this
form, using input from FEAP evaluation reviewed with your mentor teacher, feedback from your faculty steward, and
other sources you deem reliable.
What do I want to improve?
(list specific improvement goals)
I will improve my class understanding of directions
before the students start the activity.

I will improve my classroom management during whole

group instruction.

How will I achieve this?

(list specific steps you will take)
1. Have students repeat directions
before starting the activity.
2. Ask for more feedback from my
mentor
3. Keep track of how many students
ask for directions after each
lesson.
4. Visit ten different students
during the activity to make sure
there is understanding among
students.
1. Be consistent with my mentors
behavior plan.
2. Become more aware when
students become loud or off
task.
3. Ask the mentor if I can give
students points, coins, etc. when
they are doing a good job or

have them clip, flip, or pull
reminders when they misbehave.
4. Have mentor keep track how
many times students
misbehaved and I did not stop
the behavior.
1. Make note of when I begin the
lesson.
2. Break down my lesson plan into
certain time limits.
3. Ask my mentor to give me a
signal if I am reaching my time
limit.
4. Look at the clock and my watch
during independent practice to
see how long I can give the
students to finish the activity.

UPDATE:
Goal 1- I did achieve this goal this semester, but I believe it was because I was in an older grade so the students were able to
understand the directions the first time they were given to them. I did receive more feedback from my mentor and she did give me
control of classroom and only had to step in once. I was also able to circulate the classroom a lot more during the lesson and was not
with one student who needed more direction during the lesson.
Goal 2- I need to work on this goal more. I was able to keep the students under control but they would still talk during the lesson. My
mentor teacher did not have a behavior management plan or a reward system to use. My mentor did say that I need to work on my
teacher voice and would let me know when I needed to get the class in check during the lesson.
Goal 3- I did achieve this goal this semester. I was able to keep in the time given for my lessons. Since it was an older grade they had a
schedule that I needed to follow. I broke down one lesson into time limits but something came up and I stopped doing that. I instead
used the teachers stop watch that the whole class could see during their group work. My mentor would let me know when to start

wrapping the lesson up before I feel into their routine. I would like to keep my time management goal to improve on because I feel
that in a lower grade it will be harder to achieve this goal that in a higher grade.

participate.
3. I will not resort to given the ELL a language
buddy for all lessons.
4. I will have more translated material on hand
for the ELL student.
1. I will use a timer for different parts of my
December 2015
lesson that students may take longer than
needed.
2. I will monitor my start time and when I would
like to transition into the next part of the
lesson or end the lesson.
3. I will ask my mentor to keep track of the time
and give me a signal when I have five minutes
left.
4. Ask students how much more time they need
when the lesson is almost over. I can see if it
needs to be a two day lesson or run over a
little bit.

UPDATE:
Goal1-I believe I have effectively learned what my teacher voice is and how to use it in the classroom setting. I have followed my
mentor behavioral plan during internship with the clip chart and every student understood the consequences of clipping down and
rewards for clipping up. I still need a little bit of work with using the attention getter and waiting for all the students attention before
moving on. With being in the classroom for 14 weeks I was able to feel and hear when the students were getting too loud and off task
and was able to bring the students back to attention before it would get out of hand.
Goal 2- I did learn a few basic phrases, mainly greetings and listen but I did not use them in the classroom that often since both ELL
are close to exiting the program. I did not have much translated material because of the students ability to understand English and
needing to practice reading and speaking English. When the students were having problems with understanding they received extra
support from the teacher and Esol para when available.

Goal 3- I have gotten much better at time management. I had to get use to carrying my phone on me so I can have alarms set
throughout the day to go off before transitions. My mentor would let me know when I was getting close to time and when I went over.
The students were told to give signal for more time before moving on to the next activity or problem. There was also 15 minutes
between lunch and recess where I was able to help the students needing more help with a subject or lesson taught.
