Scrapbook 15

The article discusses the growing ethical concerns regarding artificial intelligence as the technology improves. Google has acquired the AI company DeepMind and created an ethics board to oversee projects in response to these concerns. Experts argue that ethics boards should guide emerging technologies like autonomous weapons, vehicles, and medical care to ensure machines make ethical decisions that do not negatively impact humans. The document raises concerns about advancing autonomy and argues that replacing all human tasks with robots could lead to a dystopian future where people become too dependent on technology.

As artificial intelligence grows, so do

ethical concerns
by. Caleb Garling SFGate

This article is over a year old but

surprisingly relavent to the current
state of things. The main topic is the
ethics of Artificial Intelligence; as
Artificial Intelligence technology
improves so to does the ethical
concerns. Google in its every growing
need to control all things that stand to
change the world as we know it has delved into another area by acquiring the
Artificial Intelligence company called DeepMind. Google with the acquisition as
created an ethics board to oversee projects that are being conducted by
Deepmind.
Eliezer Yudkowsky from the Machine Intelligence Research Institute has
stated that ethics boards should be implemented as technology is evolving in
order to keep pace. Autonomous weapons, doctors, cars etc. bring great concern
for the far reaching implications of machines making ethical decisions that
ultimately can affect the lives of human beings.

This is an area where I personally have great concern; this apparent race to
autonomy. I ask why? what benefit is their in a world of lazy people? Too me the
best example of what all this autonomy might bring is from the pixar movie called
wall-e. In that movie humans have escaped a dying, trash ridden earth to live on a
space station. Living on the space station all human tasks have been replaced by
robots. All the humans need to do is sin in their floating chairs and do absolutely
nothing. Well every human in the movie is so fat they cannot do anything even if
they want to. This is an exaggerated image of what I see happening when
machines begin to simplify our lives.
