NEWS FROM KINDERGARTEN!

Learning for the month of January

Language: During our first week of January, we will be working on
the letters Ff and Bb. Then during weeks 2 to 4, we will begin
working on the following letter/sound combinations: ai, j, oa, ie,
ee, and or. Through games, such as Bingo or Letter Sounds Race,
we will review previously learned letters and sounds. As we head
into February, we will be focus on single letters as well as blending
letter sounds (e.g., sh, th, ch). During our Writers Workshop
sessions students will be encouraged to try writing simple labels or
messages through the use of classroom resources (e.g., student
dictionaries, word wall, alphabet cards) to support their writing.
In Reading, students will continue to make predictions with
unfamiliar stories. They will be provided with opportunities to read
just-right leveled stories and to use reading strategies to make
sense of new and unfamiliar words. They will share their reading
with the whole class and model reading strategies with the class.
During story time when the teachers read out loud, students will be
asked to draw/write/orally share their ideas in response to a
problem, question or solution in the story.
Math: We will be learning about Measurement this month. Through
our Math Workshops and free play, students will learn how to
compare and order two or more objects. They will explore both
non-standard units of measurement (e.g., snap cubes, foot steps,
straws, etc) and standard units of measurement.
Science: This month we will explore simple machines and magnets.
As we learn about how different materials work and what is needed
to make them work, we will be asking students to share their
questions about what they wonder or predict before and during our
investigations. Look forward to a Creation Station where we use
recyclable materials to make materials that help people!
Personal and Social Development: Using books and films,
students will learn about examples of teamwork, self-reliance,
trying new activities and adapting to new situations. On our
community walk, we will share what we know about our
surroundings and compare that with other communities in Toronto,
places in Canada and places around the world.
Visual Art: Students will explore different elements of design. In
January, students will make art featuring line and line sculptures!

Welcome, Mrs. Ramoutar!

Please extend a warm welcome to our newest kindergarten team member,
Early Childhood Educator, Mrs. Ramoutar. Mrs. Ramoutar joins Ms. Cross in
room 7. She comes to Selwyn from Diefenbaker Elementary School. The
Selwyn staff and the students of Room 7 had a lovely time meeting and
learning with her in December. We look forward to learning and working with
you in the new year, Mrs. Ramoutar!

Book Bags!
In January, we will continue the home reading program with our class book bags.
A few learning goals we would like all our students to accomplish with the book
bags at home is to a) Make predictions and B) Identify sight words
(words we come across frequently in reading and writing)
Sight Words: is, it, in, the, and, my, me, a, like, with, see, for, can, she,
he, am, go, no, to, you, yes, has/have.

Teamwork
This month our school is focusing on the character trait, teamwork. Using examples
from picture books, short films and personal experiences, we will learn about
examples and non-examples of teamwork. At home you can support your childs
character development by reading books about teamwork or watching videos that
show teamwork. Have your child share with you the ways in which they or their
peers showed teamwork at school.

Creation Station
Our kindergarten classes will gladly accept recyclable materials for our
Creation Station. Materials such as tissue boxes, shoeboxes, gift boxes or
bags, small packing boxes, wooden crates are great for making new
creations. We strongly encourage families to directly recycle any containers
that have had direct contact with food or nuts, or toilet paper rolls at home.
Thank you, kindly!
