Archbishop Ledesma Opens the Archdiocesan Jubilee Door

Sr. Teresita C Espina, FSP

Most Rev. Antonio J.

Ledesma, SJ, D. D. solemnly
opened the Jubilee Door
of St. Augustine Cathedral,
inaugurating the Jubilee of
Mercy on December 14, 2015,
at 5:00 P.M. in the Archdiocese
of Cagayan de Oro. May this
Jubilee of Mercy truly be a year
of experiencing Gods lavish
merciful love for us, and of
growing in our commitment
to the ongoing renewal of the
Church and society, the prelate
said.
The archbishop presided
at the Eucharistic celebration
together with the Oro clergy
and religious priests in the
Archdiocese. Msgr. Perseus
Cabunoc, SSJV, vicar and rector
of St. Augustine Cathedral, said
in his homily that, for the Jewish
people, a Holy Year or Jubilee
commemorates their freedom
from the slavery of Egypt. He
mentioned some ordinary and
extraordinary Jubilees in the
tradition of the Church. St. John
Paul II called the Great Jubilee
in 2000 which marked the
2000th birth celebration for
Jesus, and the opening of the
Third Millennium. Pope Francis
opened
the Extraordinary
Jubilee of Mercy on December 8,
the solemnity of the Immaculate
Conception.
Msgr. Cabunoc said that

Pope Francis wants the faithful

to rediscover and experience
once again the mercy and
compassion of God who is ever
ready to forgive. Ang kalooy mao
ang sinugdanan sa kaluwasan
sa tawo. Kung walay kalooy,
walay pagpasaylo. Mahimo
unta kitang misyonaryo ug
niadtong
nanginahanglan
diha sa atong katilingban.
(Compassion is the first step
towards
salvation. Without
mercy, there is no forgiveness
.May we become missionaries
and agents of mercy especially
to the families who are divided,
and to the poor and the needy
in our society.) He challenged
the assembly to live and share
Gods mercy to others not only
on Christmas but everyday.
The Opening of the
Holy Door was preceded by
a general orientation on the
Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy
held at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel
Church, Carmen Cagayan de Oro.
Msgr. Florencio Salvador and
Msgr. Rey Monsanto expounded
on the characteristics of
the Jubilee Year such as:
the opening of Holy Doors
and the granting of plenary
indulgences; the pilgrimage as
an impetus to conversion; the
rediscovery of the corporal and
spiritual works of mercy; the

sacrament of reconciliation,
and the granting of indulgences
during the Holy Year of
Mercy. The brief catechism
was followed by a communal
celebration of the Sacrament
of Reconciliation. All priests
were available for individual
confessions. Then the assembly
made a penitential procession
from Mt. Carmel Church to St.
Augustine Cathedral, where the

A BISHOPS ODYSSEY IN THE PRELATURE OF IPIL

Archbishop Antonio J. Ledesma, SJ

When I first met Bishop Federico Escaler, S.J., in Ipil Prelature

in September 1980, he had just been installed three months earlier on
June 21 as its first bishop-prelate. The Prelature of Ipil was created
out of the earlier Jesuit Mission District, attached to the Archdiocese
of Zamboanga. At that time, the mission district covered a third of
Zamboanga del Sur province, from Tungawan in the southwest
to Margosatubig. (In was turned over earlier to Pagadian Diocese
because of the distance from Ipil.)
In 1980-81, I was assigned as Assistant Parish Priest to Siay in
the newly-created prelature as my pastoral exposure after my special
studies abroad. The land area of Siay parish then was vast, including
the two present-day parishes of Payao, a coastal municipality, and
Sampoli in Sibuguey Valley. Siay had no electricity and we had to use
the kinki kerosene lamps at night. The provincial highway traversing
the prelature from Pagadian to Zamboanga City (a distance longer
than the Manila-Baguio route) was rough and unpaved--dusty when
dry, muddy when wet. The barangay roads were in a worse condition.
With some lay leaders we were used to walk two to four hours to reach
a remote kapilya community. Taking a banca or riding on a horse was
not uncommon as the only means to reach a sitio.

I. Lawlessness and Human Rights Violations

It was in this setting at the height of Martial Law that the prelature
confronted peace and order issues. Five armed groups were said to be
active in the prelature -- the Moro pirates preying on small fishermen
along the sea coast; the military manning checkpoints along the
highway; the New Peoples Army moving along the mountain range;
some lost command units cuddled by the military or the Moro National
Liberation Front; and occasional bandit groups in the hinterlands.
There were also kidnapping incidents as well as passenger buses
being ambushed. Charges of human rights violations were brought
up against the military by several of our lay leaders. Some of them
were even suspected as NPA sympathizers. One report brought up in
one of our prelature assemblies was about an air force plane dropping
bombs on a suspected barangay occupied by indigenous people,
causing casualties, among unarmed Subanon civilians. At one of our
clergy meetings with Bishop Escaler, we drew up a set of principles for
the protection of the human rights of any victim, regardless of religious
belief or culture. This was much appreciated, we learned later, by
Muslims and lumads who heard about this.

II. Muslim-Christian Relations

Relations with Muslims were not easy at this time with the MNLF
insurgency going on. Resident Muslim families were considered part
of the community. However, outside elements could easily come in and
out along the long coastline or through river routes. In the early 70s
the Ilaga-Barracuda conflict, involving extremist armed groups on both
sides, broke out in several parts of Mindanao. At one point, Ipil town
itself became a battle ground. Towns people recall the bravery of Fr.
Bob Walsh, an American Jesuit missionary, who in his white soutana
was the only one not afraid to go out on his motorcycle to the battle
field to bury the Muslim dead. Fr. Bob had learned Tausug and earned
the respect of Muslim residents in Ipil. As parish priest of Ipil, he started
the construction of the square-shaped cathedral upon the coming of
Bishop Escaler. On another occasion, Fr. Adrian Mestdag, S.J., a
Belgian missionary who had worked in Africa and was the parish priest
of Kabasalan, recalled how Fr. Walsh and Fr. Francisco Montecastro,
S.J., would keep watch at nights by the Kabasalan bridge to prevent
Ilaga militants from crossing to attack a minority Muslim settlement
on the other side. At the signing of the Tripoli Agreement in 1976 on
Christmas eve, he also remembered the firing of rifles into the air by
many combatants as a celebration for ending hostilities.

III. KRISKA Program

The unsettled conditions throughout the Zamboanga Peninsula

in the 70s and 80s was perhaps one reason for the wide spread
adoption of the Kristohanong Kasilinganan (Christian Neighborliness)
program. KRISKA, the acronym of the program, was introduced in the
Jesuit Mission District by several of the Filipino Jesuit priests, including
Frs. Simplicio Sunpayco, Samuel Dizon, Angel Antonio and Domingo
Macalam. Learning from the earlier experiences of the Maryknoll
Fathers in Tagum and the Oblate Missionaries of Mary in Cotabato
in forming Basic Christian Communities (later called Basic Ecclesial
Communities), Fr. Sim as Mission Superior pushed for its introduction
in all the parishes. It was also seen as the concretization of the
recently-concluded Vatican II Council towards a participatory church.
When the prelature was formed, Bishop Escaler fully supported the
program, also providing some funding with counterpart from each
parish.

A BISHOPS ODYSSEY

The KRISKA program entailed the formation of groupings of

five or more families into cells (seldas). The cells would have weekly

sessions for Bible-and-life sharing based on the Sunday Gospel

passage. A KRISKA guide would be used by the facilitator or alagad
(servant) for the group members reflections and sharing.
In a sitio or barangay, a grouping of these seldas would form
a kapilya (chapel) community. All the selda members would come
together on Sundays for their Katilingbanong Pag-ampo (Community
Worship) at the kapilya building. The kapilya community would have
its core group of officers, including a president, a kaabag or lay
minister, a secretary and other leaders.
A grouping of about five to seven kapilyas would constitute
a sona (zone), under a sona president (usually one of the kapilya
presidents). In Siay Parish in 1980-81, we had ten sonas,
corresponding to ecological zones e.g., kapilyas along the coastline,
or upland kapilyas, or rice-growing kapilyas in Sibuguey Valley. The
Parish Council included the ten sona presidents as members, ensuring
the participation of rural communities beyond the poblacion (town
center). Parish assemblies included all the kapilya presidents.
The selda-kapilya-sona structure of the parish facilitated the
conduct of various ministries e.g., bible-sharing at the selda level,
sacramental celebrations at the kapilya level, and pre-Cana seminars
at the sona level. The collective leadership at every level produced
many local leaders among ordinary small farmers, fishermen,
housewives, etc. The KRISKA structures also provided a sense
of solidarity and security among members in the face of attempted
incursions by the NPA, military harassments, or some other crisis.
Likewise, the interfacing of structures reinforced ones identity as a
member of a selda, a kapilya, a sona, and a parish altogether.

IV Clergy, Sisters, and Lay Workers

Two factors contributed to the rapid expansion of the KRISKA

program. The first was the support of practically all the clergy and
religious, with the full backing of the bishop. In addition to the Jesuit
mission fathers and the growing number of Filipino diocesan priests,
other missionary congregations of men came to reinforce the prelature
clergy: Maryknoll, PIME, Claretians, and Sacred Heart. Bishop
Escaler also invited several sisters congregations to help in the
various ministries: Dominican, St. Paul of Chartes and Spinola Sisters
for schools, Maryknoll and Medical Mission Sisters for a communitybased health program, Missionary Sisters of Mary, Mercy, and Faithful
Companions of Jesus sisters for parish work, and RVM sisters in the
seminary and the bishops house.
A second factor was the formation and support of full-time
parish lay workers. Several of these dedicated lay workers had been
sent earlier in 1970 to a summer institute on leadership at Xavier
University. Others were sent to other formation programs in Oroquieta
or other places in Mindanao. Many of these lay workers became the
trainors of alagads for selda formation, seminar speakers on family
life, social action heads, etc. Bishop Escaler continued this practice of
lay workers and leaders ongoing formation which resulted in a more
participatory laity-driven local church.

V Kidnapping of a Bishop

On February 22-25, 1985, much of the activity in the prelature

came to a standstill with the news that Bishop Escaler with some
companions was kidnapped. In retrospect, all the earlier concerns of
the prelature on lawlessness and human rights violations now came to
a head in the personal drama involving the bishop and his companions.
Bishop Escaler left early Friday morning for Zamboanga City
in a white-colored L-300 vehicle with ten other passengers. Midway
along a secluded bend of the highway in Tungawan, their vehicle was
stopped by about ten armed men dressed in military fatigues. One of
the car tires was punctured by bullets. All the passengers were ordered
to come out of the car. Two of the elderly women who could not walk
far were allowed by the rebels to stay behind. The rest were forced
to move toward the forest the bishop, three other men (Meliton, the
driver; Joel, a teacher; and Rene, a convento boy), and five women
(Neneng, the bishops secretary; Sr. Nilda, a Spinola sister; Janet,
principal of the prelatures night high school; Genie, a catechist; and
Jojo, a nurse of the CBHP ministry).
For four days and nights, according to Sr. Nilda, the group was
forced to walk through thick underbrush, ford streams, endure leeches
and mosquitoes, and climb up a steep hill. They prayed the rosary
as a group at first and then individually when the kidnappers told
them to keep quiet. Each one had a ration of only three spoonfuls of
lugaw every day. Drinking water came from the river. (Bishop Escaler
himself eventually suffered dehydration and on the last day had to be
aided by Meliton, his faithful driver for many years.)
On the first day, the kidnappers killed two fishermen along the
river because they chanced to witness the whole party passing by.
The rebels spoke in a mixture of Bisaya and a Muslim dialect. The
youngest among them was a ten-year old boy with a harelip. Bishop
Escaler offered to help him go to school and have his harelip operated
on when this ordeal was over. However, that was the last time he saw
the boy.

Sr. Nilda recalls the presence of mind of the bishop insisting to

the rebels that all nine persons stay together in one place; negotiating
with the leader to release everyone else if the kidnappers were only
after the bishop; and stating frankly that the church does not pay
ransom money. As they moved along, Bishop Escaler dropped pieces
of tissue paper which provided a trail for any pursuing party. On
the third day, a Sunday, after climbing up a hill to reach a plateau
where the rebels had built several huts, the abducted group shared
some foreboding that this might be the end for them. They prayed
and examined their conscience while the bishop offered to give them
general absolution.
Then, on the fourth day, Monday, at noontime, the victims heard
bullet shots whizzing over their heads as a combined group of CAFGU
personnel and regular soldiers opened fire at the hut where they were
staying. After an intense exchange of gunfire, the nine kidnap victims
were told to crawl out of the hut, and roll down the hill towards the river.
Although now safely in the hands of their rescuers, the entire group
still had to trek from sundown to midnight to reach the landing site of a
military helicopter that would take them to Zamboanga City.
Fortunately, the rescued persons had no major injuries; only
bruises on their arms and blisters on their feet. For Sr. Nilda, what was
most uplifting for their recovery was the realization that all the parish
churches in the prelature had been conducting prayer vigils during
the entire period of uncertainty and helpless waiting. The Pope also
sent a message of concern while national newspapers headlined the
progress of the crisis.
None of the kidnappers were apprehended and there were no
casualties on either side. (Some skeptics hinted that the kidnapping
was stage-managed because the bishop was known to be among the
magnificent seven bishops critical of martial law.) Nonetheless, it
was for everyone a traumatic experience that Bishop Escaler helped
mitigate by his calm negotiating conversations with the kidnappers
and his insistence that he and his companions stay together all the
time.

VI The Ipil Raid and Massacre

Uncannily, the four days of the kidnapping incident in 1985 were

followed exactly one year later by the EDSA People Power Revolution
on Feb. 22-25, 1986. The entire country was caught up with hopes
for a brighter future after the vicissitudes of 14 years of a martial law
regime. Yet, after the tenth anniversary of his episcopal ordination
in 1986, Bishop Escaler indicated to the apostolic nuncio his desire
to retire. He cited the need for a younger successor who could
administer a prelature as varied as Ipil with 13 different nationalities
and 18 religious missionary priests and sisters. The total income from
the 17 parishes, he reported, accounted for only 7.4 per cent of the
prelatures expenses.
Bishop Escaler acknowledged the nuncios reservations
regarding his proposed early retirement at age 65. He continued to
solicit outside help in terms of more missionary personnel and funding
over the next ten years. More significantly, he nurtured the growth
of a local clergy. A modest building for the St. Joseph Seminary of
Ipil was blessed in Zamboanga City to enable the prelatures college
seminarians to study at the Ateneo de Zamboanga University.
Then as he was approaching the normal retirement age for
bishops at 75, unexpectedly, Bishop Escaler met the last and heaviest
crisis in his episcopal ministry. On April 4, 1996, at high noon, Ipil was
attacked by a motley group of rebels coming from four directions. It
was the first time that the name Abu Sayyaf gained notoriety. The
rebels razed the market place to the ground, fired indiscriminately at
civilians, killed six policemen at their outpost, looted two banks, and
left behind 60 or more persons dead. Among the dead were Placido,
the cathedrals secretary, and Benigno, one of our social action
workers in Siay.
The resident priests were out of Ipil for a meeting while the
sisters had gone early that morning to start their retreat in Zamboanga.
Bishop Escaler was left alone to go to the burnt market place, bless
the dead, and console dazed relatives and friends of the victims. But
the most important action he made was to urge the townspeople not to
resort to any reprisals against the minority Muslim community residing
in Ipil.
When I joined Bishop Escaler as Coadjutor Bishop the following
year, in October 1996, the peace building program was the first
activity I engaged in. Through seminars among clergy, religious and
parishioners, we hoped to create a culture of peace, especially in the
light of the impending peace agreement between the government and
the MNLF.
On July 16, 1997, Bishop Escaler passed on the full running of
the prelature to me after a nine-month apprenticeship. Looking back,
he left behind a legacy that exemplified his episcopal motto, Pro Fide
et Justitia. He had served for 21 years as bishop-founder of two of
the poorest mission areas in Mindanao four years in Kidapawan and
17 years in Ipil. He weathered two of the most harrowing experiences
a pastor could have the kidnapping and the deadly raid in his home
town. In the meantime, as a good administrator, he managed to solicit
outside resources for the growing needs of the local church, even
leaving behind an endowment fund to sustain the operations of the
prelature (now a diocese with its third bishop).
But perhaps, most of all, Bishop Escaler was able to harness and
harmonize the multiple charisms of the first generation of missionary
priests and religious in Ipil meeting with them in quarterly prelature
assemblies and encouraging them to build the participatory structures
of the KRISKA-BEC program.
During his 18 years of retirement, Bishop Escaler made himself
available for calls of the ministry in the Manila area. One of his last
wishes was fulfilled when he joined 40 other Jesuits in a private
audience with Pope Francis at the nunciature during the papal visit
last year. Bishop Escaler died quietly on November 28, 2015, at the
age of 93. His remains were laid at the Jesuit cemetery of Sacred
Heart Novitiate where he had started his religious life 74 years ago.
His niche is not far from the niche of another Jesuit bishop who also
served in Mindanao, Bishop Francisco Claver. May they rest in
peace.

Mga gamut-hinungdan sa
kagubot sa Mindanao

LAMDAG
January 1-February 9, 2016

Sinulat nila:
Fr. Flordelito Nazareno, Immaculate Conception Parish, Wao, Lanao del Sur
Fr. Paul Glynn SSC, Interfaith Ministry, Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro

mga negatibo man.

o nangdayo giisip usab nga samukan ug manggugbot.
taga-Luzon ug Kabisay-an nganhi sa Mindanao wala gyud
makatabang pagtukod ug kalinaw.

ACDO joins 3rd CBCP-BEC National Assembly

By: Sweet Kristine Ace G. Adorio

The Archdiocesan BEC

formation team attended the 3rd
CBCP-BEC National Assembly
on November 11-14, 2015 at
Paco Catholic School in Manila.
Hosted by the Ecclesiastical
province of Manila, the theme
was: 50 Years of Vatican II: BEC
as Community of Missionary
Disciples and Church of the
Poor. The assembly also served
as the culminating celebration
of the Philippine Church of the
50th anniversary of Vatican II.
More
than
1,100
participants from the 74
Dioceses of the country came,
most of whom were clergy,
religious, and BEC lay leaders.
The official delegates were
accommodated in the different
parishes of the Archdiocese of
Manila and welcomed by their
host families. ACDO delegates
were assigned to the Diocese of
Paraaque.
In the afternoon of the first
day, Most Rev. Socrates Villegas,
DD, CBCP President, led the
opening mass at San Fernando
de Dilao Parish in Paco, Manila.
The plenary assemblies were all
held at the auditorium of Paco

In
the

November 12, His Eminence,
Orlando Cardinal Quevedo,

D.D., Archbishop of Cotabato,

He strongly stressed that the
Church is the people of God.
The day ended with a mass
presided by the Most Rev. Jose
Palma, D. D., Archbishop of Cebu,
who shared in his homily that
the BEC has brought so much
development in the Church
and has nourished the faith of
Catholic believers.
In the next two days,
representatives from various
regions in Mindanao, Visayas
and Luzon shared stories of
their respective BECs in creative
ways. Following the reports,
Msgr. Manny Gabriel made
a synthesis and Fr. Amado
Picardal presented the Trends,
Concerns and Challenges of the
BECs in the country. Then, His
Eminence Luis Antonio Cardinal
Tagle gave the most awaited talk:
The BECs in the Philippines:
Responding as a Community of
Missionary Disciples to the call
of Pope Francis to be a Poor
Church for the Poor. He said the
BECs become a communion with
Christ and became the backbone
for the Church to spread out the
Evangelization into action.
Following the afternoon

Mass which recalled the BEC

martyrs, the delegates had
a special dinner and socials.
The culminating activity on
November 14 at the Cuneta
Astrodome from 12:00 noon
to 5:00 PM was attended, not
only by official delegates and
observers, but also by over
10,000 members of BECs in the
National Capital Region. This
was preceded by motorcades
from various dioceses and
parishes in Metro-Manila which
converged near DFA building

kaparian,relihiyoso ug relihiyosa sulod
sa Arkidiyosesis sa Cagayan de Oro.
Diha sa santos nga misa nga
gipangunahan ni Most. Rev. Jose

and learned from their practices.
They were also inspired
from the talks and witnessed
the great challenges in the
apostolate. They went home to
their parishes filled with hope
and enthusiastic energy to
continue their voluntary works
with courage. What made the
gathering remarkable was the
different success stories learned
from each other, and being part
of the discoveries of the BECs
dreams for the upcoming years.

New Evangelization
Proclamations 2015

The
Confraternity
of
Catholic
Lay
Theologians
carried out proclamations of
the Faith as part of the New
Evangelization. Last Oct 31,
2015, a big crowd gathered at
the plaza of Mati in Claveria,
Misamis Oriental, under the
parish of Fr. Joel Lusat, SSJV, to
witness the proclamation of the
Gospel of Christ. It is interesting
to note that there were nonCatholics who attended the
event.
Moreover, prior to the
said event there were two
separate New Evangelization
proclamations in two different
places. One was at Brgy. Loguilo,
Alubijid under the Parish of
Msgr. Elmer Abacahin, SSJV, PC,

and at Punta Silum, Manticao

of Fr. Joselito Cabactulan, SSJV.
The latter called up different
evangelizers and defenders of
the faith to explain the Catholic
Faith
which
was
recently
attacked by some other antiecumenical denominations who
held a public colloquium in the
same place.
The events were intended
to invite more people back to
an active life in the Church.
It was also a response to one
of the challenges of the new
evangelization: to bring those
who have grown cold in the Faith
back to the Church. The group is
now looking forward to making
more proclamations in the year
2016.

PAURARAY
LK.2:16-21

Mao! Pauraray sa bag-ong tuig

aron dili mag-aray-aray tibuok tuig!
Happy New Year na pud! Magpabuto
na pud ta! Tarattatattarattatattat

mapugngantottototot tottottot tototot tottot. Mao nga gapaningkamot ta nga
sugdan nato ang tuig nga nindot aron malihian kini aron nindot pud ang tibuok tuig.
Mao kinahanglan nga naay bag-o gyung sinina nga adunay linginlingin, bag-ong
karsunis nga adunay linginlingin, bag-ong sapatos nga adunay linginlingin ug bisan
unsa basta kay bag-o nga naay linginlingin ug apil dagway nga lingin gibag-o. Mao
gyud!
Mao!
tinagayay, niluksuhay, sininggitay, sinayaway, kinantahay, pinakpakay, sinabaay,

A-ACCEPT THE TRUTH.
kamatuoran. Si Hesus ang maghatag kanatog kagawasan. Siya ang kagawasan sa
atong mga pagpakasala.
R-REFORM OUR LIVES.

Y-YES TO GOD.

KAUGALINGONG PANGHUNAHUNA

CIACAT Holds Planning Workshop

Sr. Pearl Balbastro, DC

Cagayan
de
Oros
City Inter-Agency Council
against
Trafficking

Violence against Women

(CIACAT) held a Planning
Workshop on August 25,
2015 at Philtown Hotel,
Cagayan de Oro City. They
finalized the program of
activities to be submitted
to the City Council of
Cagayan de Oro for budget
purposes under the care
of Hon. Teodolfo Lao. The
workshop was attended
by 23 government offices/
agencies, non-government
agencies, among them the
Archdiocese of Cagayan de
Oro Migrants Ministry. The
Council was formed in June
2015 making Cagayan de Oro
the first city in Mindanao to
have organized CIACAT, as
mandated by R.A. 9208 and
amended by R.A. 10364, the
expanded Anti-Trafficking
Law. It is noteworthy that
Sec. 15 of the Law provides
for the establishment of
Migrants Advisory and
Information
Network
Desks in municipalities and
provinces in coordination
with
DILG,
Philippine
Information Agency (PIA),
Commission on Filipinos
Overseas (CFO), NGOs and
other concerned agencies.

The Council formed

three
committees:
1.Prevention;
2.
Quick
Response/Rescue; and 3.
After Care. The different
agencies/offices
will
collaborate as a group but
divide themselves according
to the expertise/services of
their respective agency/
office.
The Planning Workshop
gave
an
orientation,
presented by Prosecutor
Joseph Eduard Eullaran
of the Quick Reaction
Teams (QRT), and the
functions and duties of
each agency member. QRTs
are small teams of 4-5
members with skills and
knowledge to counter a
particular Trafficking in
Person (TIP) case based
on the requirements of
the law. There are four
venues of QRTs: airport,
seaport, land-based, and
at-large.
Composition
of
representatives
of
government agencies is
more or less similar: a team
leader, a law enforcement
officer, a prosecutor, and
a counseling officer. They
are important especially
in relation to Sec. 10 of
R.A. 7610 which provides
that any person who has
in his company a minor,

10 years or more younger,

who is not related within
the 4th degree of affinity/
consanguinity
(children,
niece/nephew, first cousin),
or he/she is not performing
a legal or moral duty and
cannot explain convincingly
their being together, may
already be liable for human
trafficking.
Prosecutor
Ruby
Malanog discussed
the
important provisions of R.A.
9208 as amended by R.A.
10364. A trafficked child is

one who has been recruited,

transported,
transferred,
harbored,
adopted,
or
received for the purpose
of
exploitation
within
or outside the country.
Consent is not material;
meaning it does not remove
the crime or make it lawful.
These and many small data
that the public ought to
know were presented and
explained so clearly that
one could feel committed
to be a part of the antitrafficking campaign which

mahitungod
sa
National
Youth Day. Ang walo (8) ka
tema nga gihisgutan mao ang
Personhood, Live Pure, Climate
Change, Vocation, Indigenous
People,
Taize,
Kabataang
Bayani ug Bullying.
Dako ang pagpasalamat sa
kapunungan tungod sa suporta
nga gigahin sa matag parokya
sa arkidiyosesis nga nagpadala
ug representante nga mga
kabataan aron molambo ug
mahatagan ug dugang kahibalo
sa nagkadaiyang isyu.

Sr. Deena Mananzan,

RGS gave a talk on Human
Trafficking on November
25, 2015, at St. Augustine
Cathedral, Cagayan de Oro City.
She pointed out that human
beings are created by God
in his image and likeness; so,
everybody is sacred and holy.
Unfortunately, some people
are sold like commodities.
Human trafficking is the third
dollar earner in syndicated
crime, next to drugs trafficking
and arms trafficking. Human
trafficking is closely linked
to prostitution, forced labor,
domestic work, and child
labor. The most vulnerable are
women and children below 18
years old, virgins and minors.
They are sexually preferred
by pedophiles. They are also
exploited for cheap labor
especially in factories, farm,
and by begging syndicates.
Sr. Mananzan pointed out
that human trafficking is both
a human rights issue and a
gender issue. The root cause
is patriarchy where women,
children, slaves, animals,
and lands are
treated as
possessions of a male head of

the family. She said

that Pope John Paul
II in his Letter to
Women, 1995, calls
for conversion to
women, meaning
to
recover,
to
restore the dignity
of
women
as
human
beings
created
in
the
image and likeness
of God. (Genesis
2:27). The Pope
himself
showed
this conversion to
women by saying:
I am truly sorry!
There could never
be real love for
Sr. Deena Mananzan, RGS
humanity if more

Pasko sa Pagkatawo sa Dios Malinawong Gisaulog

mao ang walay katapusang
Amahan. Si Papa Francisco
sa pagsugod sa Jubileo sa
Kalooy, nag-ingon nga si
Kristo mao ang nawong sa
kalooy sa Amahan. Ika-upat:
pagatawgon siya ug Prinsipe
sa kalinaw ug tuburan sa
pakigdait sa tanan.
Gi-awhag sa arsobispo
ang katawhan sa pagsubay
sa kahayag nga mao si
Jesucristo, diha sa pagbiya sa
sala, ug magpuyo nga ligdong
nga kinabuhi.
Sa misa sa alas 8:00
sa gabii, nga gipangunahan
ni Msgr. Perseus Cabunoc,
nangutana siya sa katawhan
kon unsay kaugmaon sa
ilang anak kay daghan
karon ang dili na mutoo sa
kaugmaon. Ang paryente ni
Juan nangutana kon unsay
iyang kaugmaon nga klaro
man nga ang gahom sa Dios

nag-uban kaniya? Si Juan

nagsangyaw sa kamatuoran
ug napunggotan sa ulo.
Si Jesus nagsangyaw sa
maayong balita, nagwali,
nag-ayo sa masakiton apan
gilansang sa krus.
Nag-awhag
si
Msgr.
Cabunoc nga ang matag
pamilya
magpadayon
sa
pagsunod
sa
Diosnong
kabubut-on.
Kon
aduna
may
pagbingkil-bingkil, Si Abp. Antonio J. Ledesma nagtimbaya sa katawhan
magpasayloay ug magpaubos
Samtang
miduol ang katawhan sa altar
dala ang ilang halad, miawit
si Msgr. Cabunoc ug Perfect
Christmas nga naghatag ug
kalipay ug kadasig sa tanan. Si Msgr. Perseus Cabunoc nag-awit ug Perfect Christmas,

Fr. Joseph Montemayor

SSJV, Vicar of St. Augustine
Cathedral said that the Church
gives honor to Mary, as the
Mother of Jesus. She was an
ordinary person but chosen
by God to be the Mother of
the Son of God. When Mary
was chosen to be the Mother
of God, He chose us also to be
his children. Every person is

blessed for he/she received

the abundance of his mercy.
Through Mary who became
the Mother of God, the door
of mercy was opened for us.
She has become our Mother
too for through Jesus, the God
in human flesh, we become
adopted children of God.
Thus, we have the privilege
of calling Mary, our Mother,

he said.
Fr. Montemayor presided
at the Eucharistic celebration
on January 1st, the Solemnity
of Mary, Mother of God at
Fatima Chapel, Velez St.,
Cagayan de Oro City.
He said that it is also
our call and challenge, and
a new years resolution to
recognize Mary, the Mother
of God as our mother too. We
are challenged to give honor
and respect to our very own
mothers. We have to respect
and value all their sacrifices
rendered to us. If we give
respect to our mothers and all
women, we show respect to
Mary the Mother of God, he
said.
The Council of Ephesus
taught that Mary is truly the
Mother of God, since she gave
birth to the Second Person of
the Trinity who became man
for our sake. This title of Mary
is solemnly proclaimed by the
Council of Ephesus in 431.

Sa Deciembre 8, 2015,
mabulokong gisaulog ang
kapistahan sa Immaculada
Conception ni Maria, Bulua
diha sa santos nga misa nga
gipangunahan ni Fr. Julius
Clavero, SSJV, uban sa kaparian
sa Cagayan de Oro.
Nag-ingon si Fr. Clavero
nga diha sa iyang titulo nga
Immaculada Conception, si
Maria puno sa grasya sa Dios.
Si Maria bulahan kaayo sa
tanang kababayenhan
kay
gikahimut-an siya sa Ginoo
tungod sa pag-uyon niya sa
iyang kabubut-on.
Si Maria gitawag nga
bag-ong Eva, nga larawan
sa pagkamasinugtanon, sa
Dios. Sa iyang titulo nga
Immaculada
Conception,
gipahinumduman kita nga
sama kang Maria, kita usab
mahimong
masinugtanon
sa Dios. Magpasalamat kita
kang Maria tungod sa iyang
pagkabalaan, nahitabo ang
plano sa Dios nga kaluwasan
alang kanatong tanan,matod

ni Fr. Clavero.
Nag-ingon siya nga ang
relevance sa
Immaculada
Conception sa atong panahon
dako kaayo. Ang sala makaguba
sa atong hulagway isip anak sa
Dios. Kon makasala kita, anaa
ang grasya sa pagpasaylo diha

sa kompisal. Makaangkon kita

sa kalooy, kaayo ug hustisya
sa Ginoo kon mangayo kita
sa iyang pasaylo. Musunod
kita sa lakang ni Maria
diha sa pagtuo, pagsalig ug
pagkamasinugtanon.
Mapasalamaton si Msgr.

Ang pagsaulog sa Pasko

Diha sa iyang homiliya,
nag-ingon ang arsobispo nga
ang gipropesiya ni Isaias, ang
pagkatawo sa Dios, nagdala
sa kahayag sa kalibutan.
Gitawag siya nga usa ka
halangdong Magtatambag sa
mga magtudulo, sa mga lider
sa katilingban. Ikaduha: ang
Manunubos
pagatawgon
