The Scholarship Jacket Summary

Martha is an eighth grader who lives with her grandparents. Each year, her school awards a scholarship jacket to the valedictorian. Martha's sister previously won the jacket, so it was expected that Martha would as well due to her grades. However, Martha overhears teachers arguing over who should receive the jacket, with one teacher saying Martha should not win. When Martha meets with the principal, she learns she has won the jacket but must pay $15, which her family cannot afford. Her grandfather believes if there is a cost, it is not truly a scholarship jacket. The next day, Martha convinces the principal to give her the jacket for free as an exception.

The Scholarship Jacket Summary
The Scholarship Jacket in Strategies for Successful Writing, by
Martha Salinas, is a story about a girl that to not always conform to
what people want. Martha is an eighth grader at a school in Texas. She
lives with her grandparents because her father couldnt afford an
eighth child. Every year at Marthas school, they give out a scholarship
jacket to the valedictorian of the school for the first eight years. The
jacket is gold and green (school colors) and Marthas sister had won it
when she was in eighth grade. Winning the scholarship jacket was
somewhat of a family tradition in Marthas eyes. One day at school,
Martha forgot her clothes for gym in her previous class. She rushed
back to the class to grab them trying not to be tardy. When she arrived
back at the classroom, she overheard an argument between two of her
teachers about whom they thought should be valedictorian. One of the
teachers believed that Martha shouldnt be the winner. After the
argument was over, Martha rushed into the room to grab her clothes
and rushed to gym class. Later that day, the principal called Martha to
the office to discuss something. Martha believed the principal was
going to tell her that she hadnt won the jacket. When she got to the

principals office it was bitter sweet. The principal told her that she
had won the jacket, but she would have to pay $15 dollars for it. This
was a problem because her family couldnt afford to pay that much for
the jacket. Martha went home to discuss the situation with her
grandfather, but it was no shocker to her when he told her he wouldnt
pay for the jacket. He believed that if he had to pay for it, then really
the jacket wasnt a scholarship jacket after all. The next day came
along and Martha went straight to the principals office to tell him what
her grandfather said. Lucky for her, the principal did have a heart, and
caved to give her the jacket for free. He said that they would make an
exception just for her. Martha was ecstatic at this news and ran back
home to tell her grandfather. She learned a valuable lesson from her
grandfather. She didnt have to conform to what the school wanted and
it worked out in her favor (357-360).
