Session Topic: Developing Math Skills -Critical Thinking & Numeracy
Time: 2:30-3:10 - TH 277
Scribe: Kendell Wiens
Connections to Specific Subjects
Mathematics
-Not only number sense, but spatial awareness as well.
-Bowling: Roll 3 dice. Create number sentences that equal
every number between 1 and 10.
-Integrate fractions as much as possible.
-Encourage students to try different/multiple strategies
-Work with patterns of numbers and number sentences.
-Take it beyond the answer to the discussion and pattern.
-How many liters of paint do we need to paint or room?
-Create your ideal bedroom on a budget.
-Surface area of an orange: peel and lay it out on grid.
-Technology outcomes? Things that plug into a wall.
-How do you teach the movement from table of values to
find the pattern and graph?
o Take the values around 0 for x. find the yintercept. Then find if its positive or negative and
by how much it changes.
o Providing matching opportunities so they can
discover their own method.
-Shape puzzles for equations of lines
-Magic in math.
-Harry Potter: How tall is Haggard? Similar things for
LOTR. How do camera angles lead to actors being
different proportions?
