STRETCH A SPRING
For loads of up to 10 N
the graph is a straight line
through the origin.
This means the pulling
force is proportional to
the extension produced.
Proportional means that
if, for example, the pulling
force doubles, the
extension doubles as well.
TENSION
Force that is transmitted
through a string, rope,
cable or wire when it is
pulled tight by forces
acting from opposite ends.
ELASTIC LIMIT
The maximum force
that can applied to an
elastic object to return to
its original length when
the force is removed.
Different springs
Some springs are stronger
than others.
A stiff spring can be pulled
with a bigger force before
reaching its elastic limit.
Which spring is stiffer, A or
B?
Stretching a rubber band
A rubber band does not
stretch at a steady rate when
pulled with an increasing force.
The graph line is not
straight.
The pulling force is never
proportional to the extension.
Try stretching one.
ACTIVITY
1. Measure the weight of the stone in the air.
2. Fully submerge the stone in the water and read the
weight of the stone.
3. Record the result in the table below.
Weight of stone , W(N)
In the air
In water
UPTHRUST
The upward force that a liquid or gas exerts on
a body floating in it.
upthrust
FLOAT OR SINK?
sinks
1. When weight is greater than upthrust, the object
in the liquid
floats
2. When weight is equal to upthrust, the object
in the liquid
rises
3. When weight is less than upthrust, the object .
in the liquid
