Miskin Theatre Assignment
The Brief
Desert Island Discs
Scenario: as a music technologist with opinions on a range of music, you will be interviewed on a podcast version of Desert Island Discs where you have
been asked to discuss the musical and sonic components of 3 songs that you enjoy. You must also discuss the musical and sonic faults with one song you
do not enjoy.
Anyone working in music needs to have good listening skills. This project allows you to discuss how certain combinations of sonic and musical elements can create
positive, or indeed negative, results.
Though analytical hearing you will learn what to listen out for when comparing and contrasting music. You must discuss three songs as if you were being interviewed on
the radio. The songs are your choice, and can be of any genre within the popular music category. This project is particularly helpful as you will be discussing music that
is already of high fidelity, giving you clues of the ideals you may wish to achieve with your own recordings. Use your vocabulary to allow other listeners to hear and
discover the elements that you find crucial to the enjoyment you find in these recordings.
The fourth song you will describe will be one to which you believe has sonic and musical faults. This could be a live rendition of a track you have previously discussed or
indeed one of your own Logic recordings. The important point to the part of the project is that it is clear you can hear something when it isnt right, and then offer ways as
to correct it.
You will be working in pairs and will take it in turn to be the interviewer and interviewee but will produce two individual programmes. The interviewer will be given some
specific scripted questions for you to answer before, after, or during each of your chosen tracks. There can be an element of role-play involved, as you may wish to take
on the personality of a successful musician who is talking about the three songs that most inspired them. Lucid responses and a wide vocabulary are desired for your
answers. It may also be advisable to pick three different sounding tracks in order to give you more scope for your discussion.
Tasks:
1. Listen to and describe/explain/critically comment on the musical and sonic elements of 3 recordings in the context of a podcast with examples of each
song. (U14 GC 1+2).
2. Describe/explain/comment critically on the musical instruments in each track and how their acoustic surrounding affected their recording. (U14 GC4). 3.
Hear and describe/explain/comment critically on the sonic and musical faults in a particular recording (U14 GC 3).
Evidence: A recorded podcast show, uploaded to your private Tumblr.
