Frozen Fact Family Rubric

Students will create a fact family using multiplication and division sentences related through properties of operations. They will choose two numbers to multiply, write the commutative property multiplication sentence, and use the inverse relationship between multiplication and division to write the two corresponding division facts. The task evaluates whether students can create a correct fact family and explain how they determined the relationships between the facts.

Frozen Fact Family

Standard: CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.OA.C.7
Fluently multiply and divide within 100, using strategies such as the relationship between
multiplication and division (e.g., knowing that 8 5 = 40, one knows 40 5 = 8) or properties of
operations.
Task: Students are going to make a frozen fact family using multiplication and division sentences
that are related. First students will choose two numbers and multiply them together. Students will
use the commutative property to write the corresponding multiplication sentence. Then students
will use their knowledge of the inverse relationship of multiplication and division to write the two
division facts.
