Windows 8 Desktop Overview

The Desktop tile on the Windows 8 Start screen provides access to the traditional desktop interface, pushing the Start screen aside to display the desktop full screen. The Windows 8 desktop is very similar to the desktop found in Windows 7, lacking only the Start button. It allows running traditional Windows programs in a familiar interface that is nearly indistinguishable from previous versions.

Windows 8 For Dummies, Dell Pocket Edition

The Desktop tile looks like a miniature version of your

real desktop, complete with your current desktop
background. When summoned, the desktop pushes
aside the Start screen and fills the screen, ready to
run your traditional Windows programs.
The Windows 8 desktop works much like the desktop
found in previous Windows versions. Shown in Figure
2-1, the Windows 8 desktop is almost indistinguishable from the one in the previous version, Windows 7.

Figure 2-1: The Windows 8 desktop lacks a Start button but

otherwise looks identical to Windows 7.
