EEE 23 DC 1-1: Vector Analysis

This document contains problems involving vector operations and transformations between rectangular, cylindrical, and spherical coordinate systems. It includes: 1) Finding vector components, projections, magnitudes, and unit vectors for points in Cartesian coordinates. 2) Converting between rectangular, cylindrical, and spherical coordinate representations of vectors and performing vector operations in each system. 3) Calculating a vector field's value and direction at a point, expressing it in different coordinate systems, and finding its magnitude and unit vector. 4) Sketching a volume defined by bounds in cylindrical coordinates and calculating its surface area and enclosed volume. 5) Supplementary problems involving vector fields from an engineering electromagnetics textbook.

DC 1-1: Vector Analysis

Problem 1: Vector Operations

Given the following points in a cartesian
coordinate system:
A(6, -1, 2); B(-2, 3, -4); C(-3, 1, 5)
a) Obtain RCA and RCB
b) ACB at vertex C
c) Find the (vector) projection of RCA on RCB
d) Find RCAxRCB
e) Area of the triangle
f) Unit vector perpendicular to the plane in
which the triangle is located
2

Problem 2: Cylindrical &

Spherical Coordinate Systems
The vectors A=2a+5a +3az and B=5ar +2a- a are situated
at point P(x=7, y=2, z=3). Do the following in rectangular
coordinates:
a)
b)
c)
d)
e)

Draw both vectors.

Find A+B
Find A B
Find AB
Find a vector C in cylindrical coordinates that is equal to
A and originates at point Q (x1=3, y1=4, z1=5). What can
you say about the components of A and C ? Is this the
case for rectangular and spherical coordinate systems?

Problem 2: Cylindrical
Coordinate System
Acyl=2a+5a +3az at point P(x=7, y=2, z=3)
NEED: Arec = Axax + Ayay + Azaz
=

tan1

2
=
7
= 15.95

tan1

Ax = Acyl ax = (2a+5a +3az) ax = 2cos + 5(-sin) + 3(0) = 0.55

Ay = Acyl ay = (2a+5a +3az) ay = 2sin + 5cos + 3(0) = 5.36
Az = Acyl az = (2a+5a +3az) az = 2(0) + 5(0) + 3(1) = 3

Arec = Axax + Ayay + Azaz = 0.55ax + 5.36ay + 3az

4

Problem 2: Spherical
Coordinate System
Bsph=5ar +2a- a at point P(x=7, y=2, z=3)
NEED: Brec = Bxax + Byay + Bzaz
= cos 1

2 + 2 + 2

= 67.6
= 15.95

Bx = Bsph ax = (5ar +2a- a)ax = 5sincos + 2coscos - (-sin )

= 5.45
Similarly, By = 0.52 and Bz = 0.06

Brec = Bxax + Byay + Bzaz = 5.45ax + 0.52ay + 0.06az

Problem 2: Cylindrical &

Spherical Coordinate Systems
Arec = 0.55ax + 5.36ay + 3az
Brec = 5.45ax + 0.52ay + 0.06az
a) Find A+B = 6ax + 5.88ay + 3.06az
b) Find A B = 5.96
c) Find AB = -1.24ax + 16.32ay -28.92az

P.
c) Find the magnitude of G at P.
d) Express G in cylindrical coordinate system.
e) Express G in spherical coordinate system.
7

Homework 1-1: Surface Area

and Volume Calculations
2.) The surfaces of a volume are defined by r
= 3 and r = 9 , = 30 and = 60 and = 45
and = 135. Sketch the differential volume
(label properly all sides and surface areas).
Find the total surface area and the volume
enclosed.
