a. Clipboard, white lined paper and pencil
b. Remembering a Forgotten President article
6. Prior Knowledge
a. Students in previous lessons reviewed the comprehension
strategy of synthesis with fables and fiction stories. In the lesson prior, they
created an anchor chart for the strategy of synthesis. Also in the previous lesson,
students reviewed the vocabulary terms for the week.
7. Lesson Beginning
a. Students will review their 5 vocabulary words for the week in a
culminating verb and vocabulary activity. The words are elect, nominate,
conclude, executive, and judicial. Students will be asked to Turn and Talk with
their partner to identify the verb in the sentence. Once the verb is identified
students will Turn and Talk to generate a definition for the underlined vocabulary
word.
8. Instructional Plan
a. The teacher will display an anchor chart from the previous day
about the comprehension strategy of synthesis to the students. Teacher will ask
students to describe synthesis. Teacher will then ask the students to describe
how they used synthesis to read fiction the previous day. The teacher will then
introduce synthesizing for nonfiction texts.
b. Teacher will model the synthesis with the article Washington
Monument. Teacher will have the students Turn and Talk with their partners
about their thinking as the article progresses. Once the article is complete,
teacher will share her synthesis of the article. Students will then be asked to
volunteer their synthesis.
