Annotated Bibliography

Barry, Johannah E. "Galapagos Conservancy Blog." Galapagos Conservancy. Mr. Richard

Wood, 2006. Web. 22 Jan. 2015.
This site is about the preservation, protection and restoration in the Galapagos Islands. It
talks about the history of the islands and how Darwin discovered it and his theory of evolution
from the beaks detrimental finches. It talks about the different islands of the Galapagos and the
significance of each of them, the people today and how the population has grown and the
biodiversity of animals and humans that live on the islands. This site also includes the
conservation challenges theyve had such as invasive and endangered species, poaching,
tourism, climate change and governance. Project areas such as ecosystem restoration, marine
conservation, knowledge management and sustainable society.
This site is probably one of the most useful ones i'll ever find because its specifically for
the Galapagos Islands and not including ecuador in it. It gives me all the information I might
need in my research which are the ethnicity, conservation & wildlife and the geography of the
area.
This site is reliable because its focusing strictly on the Galapagos Islands, wildlife, and
conservation, its not being unbiased and trying to sell something like a tourism attraction site.
Conlin, Jennifer. "IN TRANSIT; Galpagos Is Added To Endangered List." New York Times.
N.p., 08 July 2007. Web. 04 Feb. 2015.
This article on the New York Times is about the Galapagos islands being put on Unescos
world heritage in danger list along with Niokolo-Koba National Park in Senegal. Senegals
National Park rich in wildlife, was added to the list because of poaching and plans to build a
dam on the Gambia River. The Galapagos was added to the list because of increased tourism
being the major factor, according to the World Heritage Committee. The committee met last
month in New Zealand, and noted that the number of days spent by passengers on cruise ships
in the area has increased by 150 percent in the last 15 years. There are nineteen islands that
make up the Galapagos, which in 1978 became the first site placed on the World Heritage List.
The Galapagos has often been called ''a living museum and showcase of evolution''. The
increase in tourism has led to the introduction of more invasive species according to the
committee.
This article gave me the knowledge that the Galapagos was put on an endangered list
that I never knew before and it helps me understand more the detrimental effects that tourism
has on the islands though its also its main source of income.
This article is a reliable source because it was written by a woman that clearly
understood what was going on in the Galapagos Islands to write this article and its unbiased
because shes not favoring a side shes just giving information on why the Galapagos is being
put on the endangered list.
The Galapagos Affair: Satan Came to Eden. Dir. Dan Geller and Dayna Goldfine. Perf. Cate
Blanchett and Diane Kruger. Netflix. Zeitgeist Films, 4 Apr. 2014. Web. 03 Feb. 2015.

This film on netflix takes place in the 1930s when A handful of Germans pack up their
lives and move to the island of Floreana in the Galapagos because they wanted to live like
pioneers. This story takes a turn when two of the islanders disappear under suspicious
circumstances. The filmmakers came upon the murder mystery while aboard a boat working on
a nature documentary on the Galapagos. The first settlers of Florena were Berlin doctor
Friedrich Ritter and his lover Dore Strauch. The next couple to come to Floreana were the
Wittmers. And soon after came Baroness Eloise von Wagner Bosquet and her two companions
which were her lovers. The Baroness and one of her lovers disappear soon after they set up
camp on Florena. The disappearance of the Baroness and her lover remains the unsolved
mystery of the Galapagos. This documentary talks about how these people got to the secluded
island of Floreana and the strange murder mysteries that follow.
This documentary is useful to me because its a piece of history from the Galapagos that
not many people know about and it gives a good idea of what life was like trying to survive out
there on a secluded island surrounded by wildlife trying to live like a pioneer, at the same time
worrying about people going missing around you.
This is a reliable source because its a documentary I found on Netflix and not a tourism
site trying to sell something. Its unbiased because its a documented film and not favoring one
side over another, its simply showing us the tale of the unsolved murder mystery in the
Galapagos.
Stewart, Paul D., and Richard Dawkins. Galapagos: The Islands That Changed
the World. New Haven, CT: Yale UP, 2006. Print.
This book about the Galapagos Islands covers the islands origins and geography stating
how many islands there are, how they were formed by magma rising from the hot spots and
heating the lithosphere beneath causing it to expand upwards and with the thickening of the
earths crust it helped to create the galapagos. It talks about how unique each of the islands are
to each other containing different species on each island. The human discovery by Fray Tomas
de Berlanga, the bishop of Panama who had been instructed by the Holy Roman Emperor
Charles V, king of Spain, to journey to Peru to unravel the feuding of the conquistadors over
their new empire but as Fray and his crew were nearing the coast on their ship, no wind came
and they were carried off the edge of the map, into the unknown deep Pacific. Then on March
10, 1535 they found the unknown land of the Galapagos. Charles Darwin and when he first laid
eyes on the Galapagos and collect in a frenzy. He skinned birds and netted insects. He pickled
fish, reptiles and snails. And pressed hundreds of plants. Life on the land with fields of lava and
how the animals have adapted to such conditions. Survival on the coast, following the life of the
marine iguanas, penguins and seals that bask on the rocky coast and the peaceful mangrove
havens that provide refuge from the suns rays. An ocean oasis for a wide variety of different
species of fish, dolphins, sting rays etc, conserving the Galapagos and the importance of it,
how a mass extinction is happening through our actions by the degradation of the environment
and the loss of the islands geographical isolation from the mainland and from each other.
This book source has proven to be on of my most useful sources because it covers
pretty much all of my sections which i'm supposed to be studying which was the conservation,
wildlife and religion of the Galapagos.
This is a reliable source and is non biased because it is a book specifically on life in the
Galapagos not about a debate favoring one thing over another its main focus is to inform the

people on the beauty, history, wildlife and importance of conserving the Galapagos.
BBC. "THE GALAPAGOS ISLANDS - FORCES OF CHANGE - BBC - Discovery Animals
Nature (full Documentary)." YouTube. YouTube, 5 Nov. 2014. Web. 24 Feb. 2015.
This documentary is about how the Galapagos has changed over the years with evolving
life and how the species settled on the islands and which were the first plants and animals to
inhabit them. It talks about the different volcanoes and when they erupt and how long they last.
The lives of the different animals in the Galapagos such as the iguanas struggle to climb for
miles and lay their eggs in volcanic ash, sea birds like the albatross and blue footed boobies
and their breeding habits, what they eat, raising their young and their range of finding food. Fur
seals are the smallest seals in the Galapagos and play in broken lavatube sanctuaries. Types of
fish that live in the Galapagos such as the garden eels, eagle rays, sturgeons, green turtles,
puffer fish and many others and how they survive and what they eat which is mainly algae and
plankton, the Galapagos as the largest algae sea bed in the world and is home to most of the
worlds population of green sea turtles. The mangroves provide an important sanctuary for all
sea life and raising fish young or just cooling off. This documentary also talks about Darwin's
visit and how it changed the course of history and he named it the origin place of his theories.
Also the weather and the different seasons that bring certain currents and mist that affect life in
the ocean.
This Documentary was useful to me because I got to see much of the wildlife and their
survival and adaptations to the Galapagos conditions. The weather and sea life, and many other
things that i'm studying for this project. It all helps me get a better understanding of the place
and its history.
This is a reliable source because it was from BBC and they always have awesome
documentaries that are non biased and focus primarily on the place and its wildlife. Its main
focus is to show their viewers different parts of the world and its beauty and hardships that the
inhabitants face.
