Hernia Types and Treatments

Hernia is defined as the protrusion of an organ or tissue through a normal or abnormal opening in the wall of the cavity that normally contains it. There are two main types: external and internal hernias. External hernias include inguinal, umbilical, and femoral hernias. Increased abdominal pressure, obesity, multiparity, and trauma can all contribute to hernia development. A hernia sac forms that may contain peritoneum, intestine, or other organs. Clinical signs include a bulge or pain that may become incarcerated, obstructed, or strangulated if the blood supply is cut off. Different surgical repair techniques exist depending on the hernia type.
