Deeply rooted in the
Cognitive Learning Theory:
Learning Depends on
Practice and Feedback
1) Identify Topics:
-Set specific topics that can
be illustrated with many examples and
developed through practice (procedural
skills)
2) Specify Learning Objectives:
- This model deals mostly with procedural
skills and conceptual knowledge
therefore the students must
comprehend and apply their knowledge
to their work as well as be able to
transfer their skills to other concepts
-Stresses practicing enough where the skill
comes naturally to the student and can
be applied to unrelated subjects
3) Prepare Examples and Problems
-Examples are critical
-Create straightforward problems that are
relevant and can be tied to the learning
objectives
1) Introduction and Review:
-Hook students from beginning
-Informally Assess Prior Knowledge
2) Presentation
-Strongly emphasize understanding
-Ask students to explain their
answer
-Avoid rushing through without
understanding
3) Guided Practice
-Ask questions within students ZPD
-Ask clarifying questions
4) Independent Practice
-The ideal is practicing first in the
classroom and then assigning
relevant homework
-Allows students to gain confidence
working independently.
Increasing Motivation:
1) Use activities and games
to hold students attention
2) Personalize Topics
3) Use familiar and
relevant examples
This model also has many
characteristics of
Vygotskys Theory:
-ZPD
-More knowledgeable other
-Social Interaction
-Teacher effectiveness
research
Assessment:
1) Word problems
2) Homework (for
independent practice)
3) Multiple choice and open
ended quizzes and tests

So what? What is important to understand about this?
This is a great model for teachers to use if they want their students to understand a specific skill that they can use. While this model works well
with all students, it is particularly beneficial to low achieving students as well as students with disabilities due to the teacher modeling and one-onone time.
