Political Update
Leadership Academy
St. Patricks Day Parade
On Tuesday, March 15, five states
held their primary elections. These states
included: North Carolina, Florida, Missouri, Ohio, and Illinois. For the Democratic
Party, Hillary Clinton won four out of the five
states. She won all except Missouri. The
race against Bernie Sanders in Missouri
is too close to call. In order for Sanders to
catch back up to Hillary, he needs to win
some big states. For the Republican Party,
Trump also won four out of the five states.
He won North Carolina, Illinois, Missouri,
and Florida. The only state he was not able
to win was Ohio. John Kasich, the current
governor of Ohio, won Ohio over Trump.
After Trump won Ohio, Marco Rubio, who is
originally from Ohio, announced his suspension in the presidential race. While Ted
Cruz did not win any states last night, he is
neck and neck with Trump.
In other news Barak Obama has announced his nominee to fill the vacancy on
the Supreme Court. Obama has nominated
Merrick Garland. He is a well-known figure
in Washington who has served on appellate
courts. Hes 63 and has received praises
from both parties. Despite this, some Republican senators are refusing to consider
Obamas nomination, until the next President is nominated. Other Republicans are
agreeing to meet with his nominee, after
the two-week congressional recess had
ended. It is still up in the air, rather they are
going to take his nomination into consideration or ignore it entirely.
Leadership academy is almost to an
end. After all the meetings, the academy is
ready to celebrate their final event. On May
6th, the academy is hosting an event at the
Tower Park. The event is a community appreciation night. Theyre showing appreciation to all the teachers, police officers, fire
department, and everyone else involved in
the community. They will also be accepting
donations to fund a scholarship for one lucky
member of the academy next school year.
The event will be from 5-7 and there will be
food, activities, and entertainment included.
There will also be karaoke, so if youre interested in getting a group to get up there, let
anyone in the academy know. The event is
open to the public and they look forward to
everyone coming out to show support.
The St. Patricks Day parade was
held this past Thursday, March 17th. A few
of our students were in the parade, along
with Mrs. Thorton and Mrs. Gorman, representing both the Recycling Club and Key
Club. They were asked to walk the parade
with Midstate College and the Center for
Prevention of Abuse. The parade was nine
blocks long, with 104 different floats. It was
a lot of fun to be able to be in the parade
on such a beautiful day, while helping raise
awareness for the center.

Key Club
By Madilyn Tortat
Key Club has been busy this past
few weeks. First, the blood drive where
they collected 26 pints of blood, then the
officers attended the annual district convention. Convention was held in Springfield
this year. There were meetings, luncheons,
and speeches held all weekend, but also
some free time for the students. A couple
dances were held, with the donations going towards the spastics foundation. The
forums offered insight on how to further
participation in the clubs, new volunteer
opportunities, and also ways to market the
club. Our own Charlie Schneider was on
the planning committee for the whole weekend, and we congratulate him on the huge
success! Not many other Key Club sponsored events will be going on soon, but
theres always opportunities to volunteer in
the community if you are interested!
Key Club officers made their way to Springfield for
convention.
We are almost through the 201516 school year, and many teachers have
planned fun projects and interesting assignments to close out the year.
First, in all Spanish classes, Mrs.
Gibbons is preparing for the Cinco de
Mayo celebrations on May 5th. The classes
will be celebrating by doing piatas and
eating plenty of candy.
On April 28th, Mr. Suleks Physics
class will be traveling to Six Flags Great
America in Chicago to learn about velocity,
acceleration, and everything else that goes
into making a roller coaster.
On the other side of the science
spectrum, get ready for chirps and tweets!
Mrs. Tallon is preparing her biology classes
for the baby chick project they will be doing
directly after Spring Break.
In Current Events, Mr. Youngrens
students are preparing for a term paper
that is due in May. The paper must be over
any current news topic that is largely controversial.
Finally, the Journalism class has
been hard at work getting newspapers
out and preparing the next Peoria Heights
yearbook.
Many of the teachers here at
Peoria Heights High School have prepared
amazing projects and assignments for their
students to end the year, and students will
hopefully use these projects to end the
year right!

It is Official!
By Sarah Knott
Quinn Miller signed to Illinois College on Wednesday, March 16th to play
baseball on a full tuition exchange. Quinn
put a lot of thought into what school he
wanted to go to, but he finally made the
decision on Illinois College. He made his
decision based on the fact that it is a small
school, and can make a big impact on him
as a freshman. He also thinks that it is
a great location and it is not too far from
home. Their baseball program has been
excelling throughout the years making
themselves better. Quinn is not only going
to Illinois College to play baseball, but he
is going to study in business and also the
outstanding facilities. We all wish him the
very best of luck in succeeding in all plans
he has for his near future. Go Blueboys!
After much deliberation, Quinn decides to sign with
Illinois College.

Around the School
By Seth Boyer
Sports have been filled a whole
lot of upsets as of lately. The San Antonio Spurs just got upset by the Charlotte
Hornets. The Spurs, being one of the
NBAs my prestigious teams, went in to
that game believing it would be an easy
game. The Spurs also recently beat the
unstoppable Golden State Warriors 79-87.
The Golden State Warriors are now 637, but are still considered the NBAs best
team, especially when Steph Curry is on
fire. In other news, the NFL season is now
over, but there are some big moves when
it comes to players. Former Philadelphia
Eagles Running back Demarco Murray
got traded to the Tennessee Titans. With
Demarco Murray and Marcus Mariota, the
Titans might be a force to be reckoned
with. One of the greatest of all time finally
announced his retirement as well. Peyton
Manning has had many years in the NFL.
He is also the holder of many NFL records.
Along with Peyton Manning retiring, one of
the greatest defensive backs to step on the
field announced his retirement too. Charles
Woodson, drafted by the Oakland Raiders,
ended his career in Oakland as well. Now
that Peyton and Charles retired, the oldest NFL player that is not a kicker is Tom
Brady. It will be weird not seeing these
two GOATs not be playing on the field, but
retirement is a part of football.
The Juniors get pumped up for MOJO.
8th grades came over and registered for classes
during 8th grade orientation.
Track Season
By Cole Reilly
Every track player knows the smell
of spring better than anyone else, because
after Coach Smiths conditioning they are
gasping for that March air hoping that it will
help their lungs recover. Track is wonderful;
the players, the coaches, and the athletes
high all are in full blossom this time of year.
When they arent being physically destroyed by Smiths conditioning theyre out
working on their events. The boys 4x1 are
all running between: 10.9-11.6 which on paper makes out to be a blistering fast sprint
team. The girls 4x1 has nearly perfected
their hand offs which is a very impressive
feat being this early on in the season. The
boys 4x4 are all running 400s healthily under the one minute mark, looking to replicate last years main four runners success.
The team has always been relatively successful in the past, but this year they are
showing lots of promise in individual events
and relays. Most of their best runners from
last year are returning, along with some
new faces that will definitely help the team
place higher in meets. Keep an eye on this
years PHHS Track Team; I think I smell
a couple state appearances in the Spring
breeze as well.
