Geography of Breakfast Food: Blueberries
A) Blueberries are produced in 38 states, but 10 states account
for more than 98% of U.S commercial production. Those states
are Michigan, Oregon, Washington, Georgia, New Jersey,
California, North Carolina, Florida, Indiana, and British Columbia,
Canada. I mainly want to focus on blueberry production in Florida
and the physical characteristics, farming practices, and the
dependencies the crop may have. The blueberries n Florida are
grown in a set climate, the climate is called winter chilling. The
blueberries are grown in Pine Oaks mulch aids, and also
blueberries respond best to light fertilization. Some farming
practices are cultivator selection which is basically artificial
selection and they also do low chill breeding. Blueberries require
well drained soils that are high in organic matter, which is
important for site selection. A huge issues for the blueberries are
pests, and thats why they have a dependency on pesticide. The
pesticides that are being used are Boscalid, Pyraclostrobin,
Cyprodinil, and Iprodione. Farmers also use dormex on plants
which is pant growth regulator. Dormex has benefits and it also
helps the plant ripen quicker, increase size, and increase yield,
and reduce plant stress from over cropping.
B) Blueberries were first produced in Florida in the late 1800s
with wild berries. The industry declined in the 1920s there was no
hope until the 1980s when Ralph Sharpe began low chill
breeding. Florida does not offer a natural advantage for producing
the crop mainly due to Floridas humid sub-tropical climate, and
blueberries are usually grown in freezing climates. Blueberries
help the agricultural business in Florida. Blueberries are important
to Floridas economy because agriculture is the second largest
source of jobs in Florida. Blueberries are sold to local farmers
market and retail stores. Florida is an important producer in the
industry, holding patents on 30 varieties that are bred specifically
for Florida.
C) The blueberries are hand or machine harvested and one
immediately taken to a packaging
shed where they are packaged in
plastic pint containers, then the
product is refrigerated or frozen as
quickly as possible the same day it
is harvested. Blueberries are
mostly shipped in refrigerated
trucks the blueberries are shipped
to retail stores. Most blueberries
are sold in Northeast major
metropolitan areas, some are sent
to Canada and Europe and
occasionally Japan.
D) In blueberry advertisements they show the image of fresh
blueberries. They want to persuade the buyers to buy there fresh
blueberries. Blueberries dont target a specific age group it mainly
targets healthy consumers.
