Making Drawings course is designed to develop and

expand creative ideas through recording diverse
methods and processes. Each of the tasks have
different methods and purposes that enable us to
generate new ideas and skills. By recording each tasks
will allow us to experiment various styles and
approaches that will help us to expand our future
designing career.

Horniman Museum Continuous Line Drawing

Task
Draw in 1 continuous line drawing of
the train ride from New Cross Gate
to Forest Hill Station.
Using pen or pencil, make drawings
of things you experience: see, hear,
smell, and feel on your journey.
Look around the Horniman Museum
and find things that interest you the
most. Draw it for 30 minutes with
one single continuous line.

Ive combined the train ride and the

Horniman Museum tour in one
drawing. Instead Ive recorded boat
ride on its own. I did not want to rush
through and quickly fill the page
instead, I wanted to record its
atmosphere with what I can
experience with my senses on the
train. Same thing applies to drawing
the Museum tour, I took my time in
looking around and when I found an
interesting object or a situation, Ive
recorded it on my sketchbook.

Reflection

Train ride and Museum

Ive tried to record the sound, light rays, direction, colours,

shadows etc. anything I can experience with the senses
into drawings. I wanted to record different places in one
drawing therefore I walked around while completing task
which was pretty challenging as I had to hold the pen in
place. Ive concentrated on the natural-musical instruments
as the shapes interested me. I would want to try inserting
colours to the sound as someone plays it this could turn
the work more interesting and eye catching perhaps.

Drawing one continuous line is pretty challenging to create exact shapes or figures however, it has
its own style and beauty of it. By recording the atmosphere and the experience with the senses
led to creating an artwork that is unusual from the others. This freedom of drawing gave more
space and time to produce the work which I did not need to think about how perfect it should be
instead, I just had to follow where my hand led me.

Waterloo Station Social Drawing

Task
Go to a public space full of people,
observe their movement and
produce a drawing without
disturbing them. Look at what they
do, how they move, their face
expressions, the space, lighting,
furniture, sound and surfaces.
Do quick sketches of the space and
the people with pen or pencil.
The purpose of this task is to
understand the social context of
the space and produce drawings to
explain the situation to other
people.

This task was done in Waterloo station

where there are lots of people and
movements. We were given about 45
minutes to capture few situations and
turn them into drawings. Since there
were lots of movements in short
amount of time, it was impossible to
include details into the drawing
instead, I have concentrated on the
space, the figures and the position of
the figures.

Original

MONDAY 12:24PM
This is a quick drawing of two of my friends doing their task. I did not include the details of the space and the
surroundings on purpose because it would disturb the drawing itself. I thought this particular drawing of two human
figure will be enough in fact, it will look better without the surroundings.

This is a view of the coffee shop and the station. Both slow
and fast movements existing simultaneously in the
drawing. It was easier to catch peoples actions in the
coffee shop since their movements were subtle and slow
however, with the people rushing through the station was
challenging to record.
The view itself was an interesting shape with both slow
and fast phases were shown.

ROYAL FESTIVAL HALL 11:57AM

This is a drawing of a group of people practicing
their lines for the performance. The atmosphere
was concentrated and professional as their center
of attention was on the scripts they were reading.
Ive also included the sound of talking in the
drawing to give some changes.

Front Garden
Surface Survey

Task
Draw a diagram/map of the space
including both natural and man
made that you see. Mark them on
the map and list all the materials you
can recognize including its features
ie) painted, organic, wooden etc.
next to your key and legend.
Make a surface drawing of each
material by rubbing against the
material using the pencil/graphite.
Number them on the map to be
recognized.

I have chose my location as the front

garden of the house. I thought it was
an appropriate space to discover
natural and man-made materials that
can be plotted on the map. Ive made a
surface drawing of a leaf, wooden
frame, rocks, bricks and water hole. Ive
pressed harder to get the surface of
some materials such as a leaf, because
the details on the leaf were very
delicate and detailed.

Map of the garden and characteristics of the materials

11

Reflection
I thought anything with rough surface will give a good rub-out surface result however,
this wasnt the case. These objects such as rocks or bricks did not give an interesting
shape when it was rubbed. Instead, the plastic hole and the leaf was a pretty good
example of the surface survey where all the details were shown. Although leaf took some
pressure on the pencil to get the lines out of it, the lines were produced very well.

Drawing in Space Making 3D models

Task
Find an object that is about the same
size as you, make drawings of an
object and measure its features
height, width, breadth. Make a 1:5
scale drawing and apply to your
drawings. Make the scaled drawing
into 3D model using foam board/
paper.

My object

I have spent some time on this chair over the holiday and it
fits me perfectly as I lie down so I thought why couldnt I
choose this as my object to make it into 3D? Ive measured
the real size and turned it into 1:5 scale, used the foam
board to create smaller version of it.

13

Reflection
Firstly I have measured the real object and divided by 5 to get smaller version of it.
Ive made the model purely out of foam board. It was easier to cut with the foam board than any
other materials paper was to weak to hold itself in place. Foam board was useful when it came
to mimicking the curves which I only had to cut halfway to make sure it created the bending
position. The difficulties were the time when I was cutting little shapes out of thin foam board, it
wasnt strong enough to hold it in place however, using PVA glue helped.

14

Barbican Centre Draw the Line (Mapping)

Task
Inside the Barbican Centre, there
should be several yellow lines to
follow. Choose one yellow line and
draw a map with landmarks/building
features and directions. Record it
accurately enough for anyone to
recognize. This can be done in any
style however, anyone should be able
to understand or know how to read it
since it is a map.

I have separated the map into 3 pages

that have different perspectives. The
first page where the yellow line starts
has a perspective of birds-eyes-view,
a typical map and it changes to a
landscape-view as you walk. I have
identified the yellow line with pink
highlighter to be visible. The line
continues through out the pages and
change from 2D to 3D features.
Yellow line pathway

15

Reflection
This map is drawn in a view as we walk instead of bird-eye-view. This way I thought would be easier to understand
and recognize the area since the features are drawn exactly to how we see them. Sometimes it gets confusing
when we see maps that are bird-eye-view of which way it should be to look at. Anybody should be able to
understand it but since it is drawn in one way how I walked and observed, the scenery may be different walking
in the opposite direction. Also as the map continues on the next page, it should always be in order to make sense.

16

Drawing Propositional Models

Task
Go to a public space where you can
observe a situation involving 2 or
more people. Write a description of
the situation and make storyboard
including the space, their actions
and conversation.
Create a set design using simple
materials such as foam board, wire,
paper etc. from the storyboard and
include props to mimic the situation.
SITUATION
There were 4 people around the coffee table talking at the caf inside
the university. While the conversation went on, a guy stood up to go to
the bathroom. Couple of minutes later, a guy came back and they were
packing up to leave the place.

17

Reflection
It was hard to capture peoples movements and their
speech simultaneously. Also since it was a open space
with lots of people, their speech either overlapped with
others or could not hear at all.
Making the features with wire wasnt as successful as I
thought I would be. It was barely in control since the
wire was pretty thick to bend it with hand. It was also
unstable as it was hanged on the wire pole.
It would be better if I used thicker wire to hold the
features in place and thin wire to make the features
next time.

Ideation & Designing

Research Methods

Task
Take the example of a Methods Card
and carry out the instructions out of
your experience. Then in a group,
produce your own Methods Card.
Exchange the cards with the groups
and carry out each others cards and
present to the groups.

Waking up was a problem we decided to

explore since it was a common problem
we all have agreed upon. We listed
different reasons behind waking up to
become a problem from our experiences.
Using the reasons, we made some simple
sketches to confront the problem.
As a way to record thought processes,
we chose mind-mapping as it is used
often in real life. This can be useful to
generate new ideas or even completely
different ideas from what we were
thinking.

Mind Mapping
Designers always need a plan- they dont have a brief to
refer to and they need to create things from scratch. This is
where mind mapping comes into use. In a mind map,
informaMon is structured in a way that mirrors exactly how
the brain funcMons. A mind map maps out your thoughts,
using associaMons, connecMons and triggers to sMmulate
further ideas.

Mind Mapping
Choose an object and map out all of the materials used to
make it as well as the processes. Make drawings as well of
the materials and what you think the process would be.

Creating our own Method Card

Design Thinking 1

We are familiar to working in steps and follow the

instructions. Large amount of people do not write
down the thought processes nor plan backwards.
Taking notes of the thought processes and
planning ahead is always a step further than
others. By looking ahead of the processes, we
can prepare for the problems that may happen
since we can fix it beforehand.

Reflection

Method from different group

It was interesting to explore other peoples ideas and

methods when planning the thought process. We all
started at the same point however, depending on how
we think, we can all end up in different positions. By
looking at different methods from people can help to
stimulate new and further, extended ideas.

22

Making Folios/Books
Before making a folio book to present all the tasks weve completed, we did a practice session to
explore what kinds of book making there are and how to make layouts of the book.
There are several ways to bind books such as: perfect bindings, side-staple, Japanese sowing etc.

Weve made mini books with A4 paper this provided layouts of how the book
will looked like. I tried the Japanese sowing style to bind the book, it seemed to
bind the book pretty well however, for only small amount of papers.

Making a Book Cover

I have cut the cardboard according to
measurements and stuck it on to the
fabric with PVA glue. I had to use
bricks and heavy objects to hold them
in place so that it will not tear off from
the cardboard.
As the fabric I used was leather, it was
challenging to stick it on to the
cardboard. Ive cut the edges 2cm but
this was too narrow for the leather to
stick then I changed it to 3cm which
had enough space to hold itself in
place.
