To whom it may concern:
I am writing this letter at the request of Sara Shindollar. Sara was my student in
my American Studies class in the 2013-2014 school year and a student in my
Patterns of Communication class in the 2011-2012 school year. Because I had the
privilege of being Saras teacher both her freshman and her junior year, I feel
uniquely qualified to discuss this young womans tremendous qualities.
It came as no surprise to me when Sara told me that she planned to become a
teacher. She is intellectually curious and learns for the sake of learning rather
than simply for a grade. In American Studies, she became intrigued by womens
rights issues and focused many of her projects on that topic. She researched how
societal pressures impact young women and created a Facebook based service
project that supported feminism. When Sara realized that other students in the
class were researching similar topics, she eagerly joined forces with them and
expanded her project to reach more female students in the school. Piggybacking
off of this project, she then chose to read Kate Chopins The Awakening for her
next assignment. Sara expertly identified the pressures females faced at the turn
of the century and researched how Chopins work changed American culture for
the better.
As impressive as her intelligence is, her compassion and empathy are even more
admirable. Sara continually looks out for her fellow classmates and has done so
since she was a high school freshman. She was consistently aware of making sure
that all students had a group to join when working collaboratively in class.
Similarly, Sara thoughtfully invited quieter students to join in discussion during
Socratic Seminars. She co-created a class warm and fuzzy board in our
classroom where students could post positive thoughts about each other. This is a
young woman who will be phenomenal at motivating the most reluctant learners in
her classroom. She was truly born to be a teacher.
Should you have any further questions about Sara, I would be most happy to
discuss her many strong qualifications. I look forward to one day having her as a
colleague!
Sincerely,
