Inception: What the heck happened?

Ciara De Rosa | 24 April 2016 | St. Petersburg Collegiate High School

How does one infiltrate anothers deepest thoughts? How does one covet the
insidious portal that is the human mind? Its through a thing called inception. Inception
is the process by which a person enters into someone elses subconscious through their
dreams, thereon having the ability to implant ideas into their brains.
In Christopher Nolans Inception, a dream isnt just a subconscious picture; its
a vortex into some fifth dimension. Leonardo DiCaprio stars as the lead role: a middleaged man named Cobb. Cobb makes a living out of embedding ideas into the minds of
important men and women for his even more important clientele. This is a particularly
fitting review in that DiCaprio has finally won his first Oscar for his role in The
Revenant by Alejandro Gonzlez Irritu. Throughout Nolans film, Joseph GordonLevitt plays Cobbs right-hand named Arthur, the master-planner infamous for his
fastidious tendencies. Ariadne, played by Ellen Page, is an up-and-coming architect who
Cobb has newly hired to create a maze to properly allow an entrance into the newest
targets subconscious: Robert Fischer (Cillian Murphy).
Saito (Ken Watanabe) has hired Cobbs crew to help penetrate Fischers thoughts
and implant one seemingly esoteric idea in Fischers mind: that his father really loved
him. Doing this means Saito, a major CEO of Proclus Global, would bring down his most
powerful rival in the business, Fischer, whos simply doing what he can to try and live up
to his fathers expectations of him. But when Cobbs own subconscious gets in the way,
and introduces a past so dark its better left unexplored, the entire plan is put at risk.
There are some obvious pros to the extraordinary storyline and thematic
sequences of this movie, being arguably the best film of its decade, but it also has its

cons. One of the most prominent is what the heck even happened? It took me more than
three viewings of this movie to fully understand the methods behind Cobbs team of mind
excavators and what they were trying to accomplish. Each time I watch the film, I learn
something new and significant pertaining to the plot. Some themes are convoluted and
jumbled, distracting from the proper focal point. For example, when characters Cobb,
Arthur, and Eames (Tom Hardy) enter the first layer of Fischers subconscious, its like
it never happened. There are so many major notions represented within the movie that
could be completely overlooked by moviegoers, all of which are probably trying to
understand what is actually going on.
Nolan uses multiple techniques to emphasize his theme, including one of my
favorite instruments used throughout the movie: the action-packed ambience. In a
particular scene, Arthur is fighting back his antagonists as the clock ticks down so close
to the limit. Theyre coming face to face with one ultimatum: to fight their foes, or to be
sent to the mysterious underworld they call limbo. As if the subconscious wasnt
already a concept confusing enough, Nolan and the writers decided to depict it as a real
thing: this fifth dimension I discussed earlier. But, if a true lover of the writers vocation
and the artistry that is film wants to take the time, watching the movie over will certainly
allow a newfound appreciation for its plot.
Cumulatively, if an interested fan of DiCaprio is curious about this movie, it is
indubitably one of his best. Next to Shutter Island and The Great Gatsby, Inception
depicts DiCaprio in an unparalleled setting. His finesse compels even the most dynamic
film to gravitate toward his own personality; DiCaprios presence truly defines

Inception as a whole. Nolan was able to illustrate such a robust story in just a handful
of characters, thriving with their own stories of past days and future promises.
