Geological Gems Galore at Mount Batur Megacalderas in Bali, Indonesia

Mount Batur volcano in Bali, Indonesia hosts a variety of geological features within its large double-nested calderas that are up to 20 kilometers in diameter. Blocky lava flows from the past two centuries can be delineated and features such as blisters, cumuli, hornitos and spiracles are exposed where the flows reached the caldera lake. The caldera floor contains cinder cones up to 20 meters tall and Bukit Payang tuff ring that formed in a watery environment, possibly from an older caldera lake at a higher level than the current one. Mass movements in the recent past resulted in hill-sized rock blocks and hummocky terrain such as near the village of Trunyan.

Abstract
The panoramic beauty of the active Batur volcano and its periodic spectacular
strombolian eruptions have been awe-inspiring to visitors and residents alike. The
double nested calderas are huge and attain 20 kilometers diameter. Its ignimbritic
products cover a large area reaching the outskirts of Denpasar. Over a hundred
meters thick section offers opportunity for relevant detailed study art the
Tampaksiring stone-carved temples. At the caldera rims paleosol horizons of
eruptiva beckon additional data for precise dating of events. Smaller manifestations
of Baturs activity are less known, even to most geologists. In the past few years
continuing education to all visitors are through displays at the Kintamani Museum
and setting up explanatory panels at selected field sites.
Blocky lava is a dominant product and different flows of the past two centuries can
be delineated. These flows envelop steptoes of older high-topography, develop
blisters, cumuli, hornitoes and spiracles and where flows reach the caldera-lake
waters pillow lavas formed. Lake-level variations are recorded by the pillows. Lava
tunnels replete with volcanic speleothems . Tephra in many varieties of internal
architecture indicating base surge, volcanic bomb bombardment, and duration is
well exposed at Tabu within the caldera. The southwest sector of the caldera floor is
occupied by cinder cones reaching over 20 meters height and Bukit Payang, a
saucer-topped tuff ring. Bukit Payang hints at formation in a watery environment,
that could be another caldera lake at a level that was substantially higher than the
existing caldera lake position.
Mass movements of gigantic scale took place in the very recent past and resulted
in hill-size rock blocks and hummocky land surface, such as at the traditional
Trunyan village at the far side of the lake.
Mount Batur is truly a living geological laboratory endowed with reasonably easy
access.
