Chief Joseph
Born HIn-Mah-Too-Yah-Lat-Kekt, his father had been on of the earliest tribes to
convert to christianity in order to establish peaceful relations. Peace that turned to
discord when gold was found on his land, Settlers invaded the land, and the U.S
violated the treaty that they had promised them the right to remain on their
ancestral home. In anger he renounced his American friends and burned his
Bible. Refusing to sign any treaties and to leave the land. Upon his father's death,
Joseph and other leaders looked at the colonization effort with disdain and only
signed treaties when war was near. Following the murder of white settlers by
several warriors he began to march his people north. Known as the Nez Perce
War, the tribes fought the U.S Army and won many battles despite being greatly
outnumbered. However over time the physical and mental consequences took its
toll and the chief was forced to surrender for the sake of his people. He pleaded his
case to the President but was denied his petition. He and the rest of his tribe were
moved to an indian reserve away from their homeland. He died never returning to
his home.
Chief Joseph Quotes
I believe that much trouble would be saved if we opened our hearts more.
Treat all men alike. Give them the same law. Give them an even chance to live
and grow.
It makes my heart sick when I remember all the good words and broken promises.
Hear me, my chiefs! I am tired my heart is sick and sad. From where the sun now
stands, I will fight no more forever.
Queen
Liliuokalani
Queen Liliuokalani was the last sovereign in the Kamehameha dynasty. In 1887, King
Kalakaua of Hawaii was forced to sign the 1887 constitution of the kingdom of hawaii at
gunpoint. This constitution greatly weakened the monarchs power and empowered the
cabinet and legislature, mostly made up of American, European, and Hawaiian elites. The
new constitution put requirements on the right to vote that left many natives ineligible and
stripped the right altogether from asians. Consequently, any non residential americans was
given the right to vote. The natives were not amused. The King had three siblings, all highly
skilled in music, together called the royal four and his sister Liliuokalani was named heir upon
the death of the crown prince, her second eldest brother. She sought to restore the the rights
of the royal family and her people with a new constitution. Unfortunately, threatened
americans and europeans planned and staged a coup against her, overthrowing the Hawaiian
monarchy. Following a failed counter-revolution. She was arrested and imprisoned in her
palace. Where she composed the song aloha oe, among others. She formally abdicated in
exchange for the pardon of her supporters and in the hope of preventing further bloodshed.
She pleaded with the president to be reinstated,as the British had done wheb they took
power, in vain. She died at the age of 79 from a stroke after withdrawing from public life.
Leaving everything she owned to charity.
Queen Liliuokalani Quotes
Aloha Oe farewell to thee....One fond embrace before i now depart. Until we meet again.
Love of Country is deeply seated in the breast of every Hawaiian, whatever his station
The feelings of one who has been imprisoned, politically or otherwise, can only be understood
by a person who has passed through the ordeal.
I owed no allegiance to the Provisional Government so established, nor to any power or to
anyone save the will of my people and the welfare of my country.
Never cease to act because you fear you may fail.
It was the intention of the officers of the government to humiliate me by imprisoning me, but my
spirit rose above that. I was a martyr to the cause of my people and was proud of it.
Socrates
Socrates was a Greek philosopher commonly held to be the father of philosophy, though not
the first one. He was not born into a noble family and was employed as a mason. He fought
in the Athenian army, as was mandatory for citizens between the ages of sixteen and 60. He
disapproved of writing, feeling it destroyed the human memory, so most of what is known of
him comes from the writings of his students. A story exists that tells that the oracle at delphi
declared him the most intelligent man in greece. He immediately tried to disprove her but had
to reluctantly agree if only because unlike others, he could admit the things he did not know.
He attempted to change the ethical system from one based on theological doctrine to one
based on human reason.
Socrates way of thought did not go over well with most of Athens whose values he repeatedly
attacked, Athens being in decline after a defeat by Sparta, clung to values challenged my
socrates emphasis on the importance of the mind. He was tried and sentenced to execution,
friends attempted to help him escape, yet he refused, claiming to still be an Athenian and
thereby must abie its laws, even if they meant having him killed. He did not fear death. He
drank a glass of hemlock and called death the release of the soul from the body.
The only true wisdom is knowing you know nothing
Wisdom begins in wonder
Be as you wish to seem
To know, is to know that you know nothing. That is the meaning of true knowledge.
True wisdom comes to each of us when we realize how little we understand about life,
ourselves, and the world around us.
Enjoy your time in improving yourself by other mens writings,so that you shall gain
easily what others have labored hard for.
Important Note
The following slides consist of collage of historical figures in the past that we didnt get a chance to
involve in our presentation. We also included people that are of importance in our world today. We
decided that there are so many people that have left their mark in history and on the world that
deserve recognition for all their hard work.We realized that if we were one of these people we would
feel unappreciated for all our hard work and time that we put into to try to make an impact on the
world and society. So therefore we are dedicating this part of our presentation to take the time out of
our day to honor and show recognition for all their hard work, effort, and time they put into changing
our society and the world globally. Its the least that we can do after all we owe it to them!
