Dear Jane,
You have asked us to respond to your email by today. Since you sent the
same email to all three of us, we are responding collectively.
You have shared a list of allegations that you imply are from, or prepared by,
Naomi Robinson, a volunteer with the Canadian Media Guild, of which we are
members.
We have never met Naomi, collectively or as individuals, nor have we ever
spoken with her. We had no knowledge of this list, and we have no idea what
purpose it served, if any. We have never seen it nor been presented with these
allegations.
The allegations in this note do not reflect the working conditions nor the
atmosphere of As It Happens. The staff of As It Happens are diligent, hard
working people who understand the rigors of a daily current affairs program and
meet those demands every day, with flying colours. We are very proud to work
with all of our colleagues.
The allegations in this note are hurtful, untrue, baseless, damaging and
defamatory. To disseminate these allegations, or any similar allegations, would
be indefensible from an ethical point of view, and libellous.
Yours Truly,
Robin Smythe

Hello Robin, Carol and John,
Ihave a few follow-up questions. Please get back to me by tomorrow morning.
‘You wrote that you have "never been presented with these allegations," but in an email
‘Chuck Thomson told us that, "Last January, some concems were raised by a CMG
representative about workplace culture, and in light of them, management in Radio, in
collaboration with HR and the union, decided to have a series of informal conversations
with the As It Happens team. *
‘And Carmel Smyth, President of the CMG told us that: "The Corporation conducted a
review of the (As it Happens) workplace."
‘Are you saying that none of the allegations on the list were presented to you in the
conversations that Chuck is referring to, or in the review of your workplace that Carmel
‘Smyth refers to?
Or are you saying that you were not included in the conversations/review?
Also, you wrote that, "The allegations in this note are hurtful, untrue, baseless,
damaging and defamatory.”
Yet Chuck Thomson wrote that “we also found some areas we could work on and we
will, Because we're always looking to improve and strengthen our workplace culture."
And Carmel Smyth wrote that as a result of the review, "CBC management committed to
holding quarterly check-in meetings.”
So if the allegations, in their entirety, are baseless and untrue, then what are the “areas
we could work on" that Chuck refers to and why (as a result of these same allegations)
has management committed to a greater degree of scrutiny of the As it Happens
workplace?
Finally, knowing now (if you did not before) that so many of your colleagues have made
‘so many serious complaints about you and your workplace, do you have any intention to
address these concerns with the people who made them? Or is your position simply that
what they have said is completely false and defamatory?
Thank you,
Jane
5/18/18 e-mail to me from MailOnline Editorial Compliance Manager Paul Hutchinson admitting that shortly after publication, a 1/3/18 article about a dramatic mid-performance choking rescue by comedian Ed Byrne was "disappeared" after the paper realized it had been punk'd by a prankster. Here's the point: if I hadn't filed a complaint with IPSO, the publication would have kept the embarassment buried. In other words, the MailOnline willfully attempted to deceive readers and only addressed the matter because I raised a stink with IPSO
