Brenda C. Sun
Overview
Assistant Professor of Strategy, Utah State University, USA
Visiting Professor, Renmin People’s) University, Beijing, China
PhD, London School of Economics, London
Brenda has taught courses in Strategy and Intemational Management. Prior to joining academe, she held
management positions at Citicorp-Citibank, American Express, and The Boston Consulting Group. She has
a diverse, intemational background given (j) the cities she has both worked and lived in (New York, Hong
Kong, London, and Beijing), (i) her corporate experience (banking and strategy consulting), and (ji) areas
she has consulted in (from the energy sector to owner-managed business to sustainable city development)
Her award-winning doctoral dissertation involved the development and empirical testing of an
interdisciplinary model of “environmental perception and adaptive motivation” with a primary dataset of
over 1,000 Chinese steel workers. It represents the strategic review of China’s ongoing employment and
abor reforms, which have a profound impact (quite unknown to outsiders) on the nation’s 100 muillion-
strong industrial workforce and on its economic transformation
Coming from a family of owner-managers, Brenda considers herself an enterprising and risk-seeking
entrepreneur in academe. Her research strategy is to explore transition economic settings that are
characterized by a high level of uncertainty and risks (in terms of access, sensitivity, and quality of data)
Importantly, these settings help illuminate critical issues facing global business — intensifying competition,
restructuring and downsizing, M & A, technology and work intensification, and the call for adaptive
flexibility and transformational leadership. Despite high start-up costs and entry barriers, Brenda feels tht
her retum on investment in these research-adverse settings is equally high in the substantiation of her unique
positioning as a “strategy researcher with an in-depth firsthand knowledge of China”
Her postdoctoral research evolves around the themes of (1) Excellence in HR Management in the Face of
Change/Turbulence and (2) Positive Psychology of Threat and the Sustainable Enterprise. In addition to an
invited public lecture at LSE, she is the course developer and host of an innovative research-led workshop
series on Proactive Coping Strategy for PhD Research™ at LSE for the consortium of University of London
colleges including LSE, Imperial College, and King’s college, etc. to help top up on PhD completion rates
‘The project builds on and extends the theoretical and empirical results of her doctoral research on threat
effects, ic, “to forewam is to forearm”Brenda C. Sun
