1. Surrounding area
- Children playing nearby
- 200 children under 6 killed in their
driveway each year
- Check for animals sleeping under or
behind
- Objects: bicycles, garbage cans
- Check for stains or leaks under car
May alert you to a mechanical problem

2. Wheels
- Under inflated tires
- Which way your wheels are turned
3. Car body
- Damaged or missing parts
- Lights & windows are clean and
undamaged
- In winter, scrape off ice & snow

4. Under the Hood
- Once a week, check levels of engine oil
- Once a month: radiator coolant, brake,
transmission, windshield washer fluid
5. Getting into car
- Load packages & passengers from curb side
- Look carefully for approaching vehicles
- Keys in hand
- Walk around, facing traffic
- Wait for break in traffic to open door

PARKING
“The S method”
Step #1 - Signal right Flash

Keys points to remember -
• Find a space that is longer than vehicle
• Find a space at the end of a line of cars
STEP #2 – Stop Parallel with car in
front of the space and 2 – 3 feet
away
• Key Points to remember
– Your bumper should be even to 1 foot behind
that car’s rear bumper
Step # 3 – Turn steering wheel all
the way to the right
Step #4 – With your foot on the brake to
control speed, back slowly towards right rear

• Key points to remember –
always turn and look in direction you are
backing. It is OK to use mirrors , but DO
NOT RELY on them. WHY?
Step #5 – When your seat gets even with
rear bumper, strengthen your steering wheel
lightly and continue backing up
Step #6 – When your right front bumper gets even
with the bumper, turn wheel all the way to the left
and back slowly to the rear of the space.
Step #7 – Center UP!
• Put car in drive, straighten tires, and pull
up and center your car.
• Key point to remember
– Leave 3 feet in front and rear of your car
– WHY?
Exiting a parallel parking space
1. Back-up straight as far as you can go without
touching the car behind.
2. Turn your wheels all the way to the left (in the
U.S.)
3. Then make sure that you put your car in drive.
4. Put on your left turn signal.
5. Check traffic, including your blind spot.
6. Make sure your right fender has enough room
to clear the car in front of you.
7. Turn wheels slowly to the right when you are
half-way out of the parking space.
