Difficulty of Breathing

The client experienced difficulty breathing after surgery. An assessment found rapid, shallow breathing with a rate of 32 breaths per minute, nasal flaring, and cyanotic nailbeds. The diagnosis was ineffective breathing related to the post-surgical state. Short term objectives were to lessen difficulty of breathing through elevating the head of the bed and encouraging deep breathing. After 30 minutes the client's breathing rate decreased to 20 breaths per minute without nasal flaring or shallow breathing. Long term the client would maintain proper breathing and meet treatment goals.
