ENGLISH CIVIL WAR CAMPAIGN SUPPORT FOR DBA (nov08 variant)

1. DBA 2.1 CAMPAIGN RULES.

2. GAME LENGHT: 14 TO 18 SEASONAL GAME TURNS, STARTING FROM SUMMER, 1642; FOR CONVENIENCE TREAT
WINTERS AS NO-CAMPAIGN GAME TURNS.

3. TWO UP TO SIX PLAYERS GAME, FOR A ROYALIST FACTION AND A PARLIAMENT FACTION.

4. EACH OF THE MAIN FACTIONS IS IN CONTROL OF 3 REGIONS, EACH OF WHICH IS HOME REGION FOR ONE SPECIFIC
ARMY. SCOTLAND MAY NOT BE ENTERED BY ANY ARMY.

5. ARMY LISTS
English Royalist, 1620-1660. 5x Pi, 1x3Cv or 3Dr, 5x4P&S, 1xArt. ((W.I. n. 71 …3x3Kn, 2x 3Cv, 1x3Cv or 3Dr, 5x4P&S, 1xArt.))
English Parliamentarian, 1641-1645. 1x Pi, 3x3Cv, 1x3Cv or 3Dr, 6x4P&S, 1xArt. ((4x3Cv, 1x3Cv or 3Dr, 6x4P&S, 1xArt.))
New Model Army, 1644-1660. 4x Pi, 1x3Cv or 3Dr, 6x4P&S, 1xArt. ((5x3Cv, 1x3Cv or 3Dr, 5x4P&S, 1xArt.))
Scots Covenanter, 1638-1651. 3x3Cv, 7x4P&S, 1x3Wb, 1xArt.
Scots Royalist, 1642-1651. 1x3Cv, 1x2LH or 3Dr, 4x4Sh, 2x3Sh or 3Wb, 3x3Wb, 1x2Ps or Art.
6. ARMIES IN PLAY: IN 1642 ONE ROYALIST ARMY (WALES) AND ONE PARLIAMENT ARMY (LONDON);
STARTING FROM SPRING, 1643 : 3 ROYALIST ARMIES (WALES, CORNWALL AND YORK) AND 3 PARLIAMENT ARMIES
(LONDON, S. ENGLAND AND LINCOLN) ARE IN PLAY.
IN EACH GAME TURN EACH ARMY HAVE THEIR OWN BOUND.

7. FIRST PLAYER FOR 1642: THE ROYALIST PLAYER;


STARTING FROM SPRING, 1643 THE BOUNDS ARE TAKEN AT RANDOM, DRAWING AN ARMY MARKER FROM AN
OPAQUE CONTAINER (I.E. EACH ARMY MUST HAVE A DISTINCTIVE MARKER).

8. SCOTTISH INTERVENTION: STARTING FROM WINTER, 1642-3 (GAME TURN 3) THE SCOTS MIGHT ENTER THE
CONFLICT IN SUPPORT OF THE ROYALISTS OR THE PARLIAMENT; EACH WINTER ROLL 1D6 AND REFER TO THIS
TABLE:
1 – 2 – 3 SCOTLAND REMAINS NEUTRAL;
4 SCOTLAND ENTERS THE WAR ALLIED TO THE ROYALISTS;
5–6 SCOTLAND ENTERS THE WAR ALLIED TO THE PARLIAMENT.

N.B. EACH SUCCESSIVE WINTER ADD +1,+2,+3 TO THE DIE RESULT (RESPECTIVELY FOR 1644,1645,1646).

9. IF THE SCOTS ENTER THE WAR, SOME OF THEIR FORCES WILL BE ENGAGED IN SCOTLAND AGAINST THE LOCAL
OPPONENTS; THIS IS SIMULATED BY ONLY ALLOWING A CONTINGENT TO SUPPORT THE ENGLISH FACTION TO
WHOM SCOTLAND IS ALLIED. THE SCOTTISH CONTINGENT MAY JOIN A BATTLE UP TO 2 AREAS FAR AWAY FROM
SCOTLAND (AS PER DBA RULES) AND IS COMPOSED WITH 6 ELEMENTS TAKEN FROM THE GIVEN ARMY LISTS
(COVENANTERS PRO PARLIAMENT, SCOTS ROYALISTS PRO ROYALISTS).

10. SCOTTISH BATTLE LOSSES ARE AUTOMATICALLY RECOVERED AT THE END OF EACH BATTLE.
11. IRELAND IS A PERMANENT SOURCE OF RESOURCE POINTS FOR BOTH FACTIONS.

12. NEW MODEL ARMY: AS THE WAR PROGRESSED THE PARLIAMENT BEGAN TO RE-ORGANISE THEIR ARMIES.
STARTING FROM SPRING, 1644 ONE OF THE PARLIAMENT ARMIES MAY BE DECLARED AS A “NEW MODEL ARMY”;
STARTING FROM SPRING, 1645 ALL OF THE PARLIAMENT ARMIES ARE TO BE TREATED AS “NEW MODEL”.

13. NO CAPITOL CITIES AND NO TRIBUTARY RULES ARE USED.


14. NO ARMY OR CONTINGENT (EXCEPT NEW MODEL ARMIES) MAY MOVE FURTHER THAN 2 MOVEMENT POINTS (I.E. 2
AREAS) FROM THEIR OWN HOME REGION; IF AN ARMY IS FORCED TO RETIRE FURTHER, THAN IT IS LOST.

15. IF AT THE END OF A SEASONAL TURN A REGION IS TOTALLY CONQUERED BY ENEMY, THE ARMY BELONGING T
THAT REGION IS LOST.

16. BATTLES ARE FOUGHT AS PER DBA 2.1 RULES AMENDED FOR RENAISSANCE. “NEW MODEL ARMIES” MOUNTED
ELEMENTS ARE NOT SUBJECT TO THE MOUNTED TROOPS SPECIAL RULE.

17. VICTORY. AT THE END OF THE AUTUMN GAME TURN, 1645 THE PLAYERS DETERMINE THE VICTOR BY ACCOUNTING
THE RESOURCES CONTROLLED. THE SCOTTISH-CONTROLLED RESORCES ARE ACCONTED FOR THE PLAYER THEY
ARE ALLIED TO.

18. IF MUTUALLY AGREED, THE GAME MAY CONTINUE FOR AN ADDITIONAL YEAR, UNTIL AUTUMN, 1646.
