Grinding, Assembly and Testing. Product A Requires 15, 20 and 10min For

A small manufacturer produces two products, Product A and Product B, which require different amounts of time for grinding, assembly, and testing. The production run calls for at least 7.5 hours of grinding, 20 hours of assembly, and 15 hours of testing. To minimize total cost of Rs 60 per unit for Product A and Rs 90 per unit for Product B, the optimal solution is to produce 20 units of each product for a minimum total cost of Rs 3000.

• A small scale manufacturer has production facilities for producing two

different products. Each of the product requires 3 different operations :
grinding, assembly and testing. Product A requires 15 , 20 and 10min for
grinding , assembly and testing. Product B requires 7.5, 40 and 45 min for
grinding , assembly and testing. The production run calls for at least 7.5
hours of grinding, 20 hours of assembly and 15 hours of testing. If
product A cost Rs 60 and product B cost Rs 90 to manufacturer ,
determine the number of units the firm should produce in order to
minimize the cost of production.
Solution:

Table:
Operations Product A Product B
Grinding 15 7.5 7.5 hr = 450 min
Assembly 20 40 20 hr = 1200 min
Testing 10 45 15 hr = 900 min
Production Cost 60 90

• Let X be the number of unit that are produced for product A and Y for product B.
• The objective function can be defined as:

Min Z = 60X + 90Y ………… (a)

• Subject to:
1. 15X + 7.5Y ≥ 450 …………..(b)
2. 20X + 40Y ≥ 1200 …………..(c)
3. 10X + 45Y ≥ 900 …………..(d)
Continued…..
• From (b)
• When X = 0 , Y = 60
• When Y = 0 , X = 30

• From (c)
• When X = 0 , Y = 30
• When Y = 0 , X = 60

• From (d)
• When X = 0 , Y = 20
• When Y = 0 , X = 90

• Since the inequalities are greater than or equal to , the feasibility extends from the
lines and away form the origin towards infinity.
• As the problem is one of the minimization , the solution points are A , B, C and D.
the origin does not lie within the solution space.
• Let us evaluate these points:
Min Z = 60X + 90Y

A (0,60) 60 *0 + 90*60 = 5400

B(20,20) 60*20 + 90 *20 = 3000
C(36,12) 60*36 + 90 *12 = 3960
D(90,0) 60*90 + 90 *0 = 5400

• From above we can see that the minimum cost of production is Rs3000 at
B(20,20). So 20 units of each product must be produced to get minimum
production cost.
