Candida albicans is the most common cause of candidiasis, also known as a yeast infection or thrush, which is a fungal infection of any Candida species. Most candidial infections result in minor symptoms like redness, itching, and discomfort, though complications can be severe or fatal if left untreated in certain groups. In healthy individuals, candidiasis is usually a very localized infection of the skin, mouth, throat, digestive tract, bladder, or genitalia.
