Staging Furniture: By: Cathy Drennen

The document provides tips for rearranging furniture in a bi-level living room. It recommends starting with a clean slate by removing all furniture. Using plastic templates to plan arrangements without heavy lifting is suggested. The redesigned room features a couch against the back wall flanked by end tables and a coffee table. A large chair is angled towards the couch to create a conversation area. Accent chairs are added in bare spots by the stairs and near the couch. Greenery is included to add life to the room.

STAGING FURNITURE

By: Cathy Drennen

Typical
Bi-level

Evaluate
• Couch is in front of the stair railing
obstructing the view into the living
room when entering the front door
• Large chair extends beyond wall
edge into the entrance way of the
next room over
• First half of room is weighted with
furniture while back half of room is
minimal
Redesign
1. Clear out the couch.
Clear out the large
chair and end
tables
Clean Slate
Remove the remaining pieces
of furniture to start with a
clean slate.
TIP OF THE DAY
 Moving furniture can be hard on the ole back. Here’s a little tip.
 Go to your dollar store and pick up rectangular plastic table covers.
 Measure your furniture and cut the table covers to the dimension of the
furniture.
 Now you have created templates that you can easily move around on
the floor until you find a nice furniture arrangement without needing a
trip to the chiropractor.
 When you’ve come up with a placement plan you feel comfortable with,
then move the heavy furniture to its place.
New Design
The couch, flanked by two
end tables, fits nicely on the
back wall.

The coffee table is in its spot.

Adding the Chairs
The large chair that was
hanging over the wall edge in
the original arrangement is
now pushed back and angled
toward the couch to create a
nice conversation area.
Filling in Bare Spots
I added one of the accent
chairs in the corner by the
stair railing. It still keeps the
view open when you come up
the steps, but helps to fill in
that bare spot.
Another Accent
Chair
I brought the second accent
chair back into the room and
placed it closer to the couch. I
did not place it in front of the
window because the window
sill is too close to the floor. I
personally do not like seeing
the back of furniture sticking
up above the window sill when
looking in from the outside.
OOGLY, BOOGLY!
FINISHING
TOUCHES
I added the third end table
next to the chair in the corner.

I also added a little flare by

placing a 6’ artificial plant
behind the chair in the corner.

I’m a huge advocate of

greenery. It communicates
life and vibrancy in a room.
I hope this tutorial on staging
furniture has been helpful.
