Working with Words #1

Play these games regularly to practice our weekly words and to review previous words

Flashcards: Write all our word wall words on index cards and have someone test you on their spelling Chant: Every week we chant each word to its own special rhythm that we make up. See how many you remember, or make up new ones together. Hangman: One person chooses a word and the other guesses letters until they get it Wikisticks: Borrow from classroom to use to practice spelling your words Flashlight: Turn out the lights. Have a family member flash a flashlight on one of your words. Read it, turn it over, and spell it. Crocodile Swamp: Place the words around the floor. Hop from word to word (as they spell each word aloud) without falling into the crocodile swamp. Words-in-words: Write each word out and then see how many words you can make from the letters (Ex: in because there is use, bee and case)

Play these games regularly to practice our weekly words and to review previous words

Go Fish/Concentration: Write each sight word on 2 pieces of paper (cardstock is best) and use the cards to play Go Fish or Concentration to collect your pair, you must spell the word!

Cut-outs: Use a magazine or newspaper to cut out the letters to make your words.

Other-handed: Write out your words using your opposite hand (if you are right-handed, try using your left). How neatly can you write them?

Writing contest: Have a copy of all the word wall words. Race with another person for one minute to see who can write the most words.

Flashwriting: In a darkened room, use a flashlight to draw letters in the air.

Play these games regularly to practice our weekly words and to review previous words
Fancy writing: Write out your words using fancy bubble letters, or letters that look like pictures.

ABC Order: Write out all your words in alphabetical order.

Rhyme time: Find rhyming words for as many of your words as you can.

Sentences: Write a sentence for every word and see how many points you can get:
+2 for sentence with 6-10 words +3 for more than 10 words +1 for capitals and punctuation +1 for creativity

Backwards Words: Write all your words forward and then backward.
