Flanged Bolt Coupling

A flanged bolt coupling consists of six 1/2-inch steel bolts around a 12-inch bolt circle and four 3/4-inch aluminum bolts around a concentric 8-inch bolt circle. The torque capacity is calculated to be either 77.75 kip-in if limited by the 9000 psi steel stress, or 233.26 kip-in if limited by the 6000 psi aluminum stress. The aluminum and steel stresses are related such that the aluminum stress is 2/9 of the steel stress.

FLANGED BOLT COUPLING

It consists of flanges rigidly attached to the ends if

the shafts and bolted together.

The torque is

transmitted by the shearing force P created in he bolts that is assumed to be uniformly distributed. For any number of bolts n, the torque capacity of the coupling is:

If a coupling has two concentric rows of bolts, the

torque capacity is: T= P1R1n1+ P2R2n2

where the subscript 1 refer to bolts on the outer circle an subscript 2 refer to bolts on the inner circle

For rigid flanges, the shear deformations in the bolts are

proportional to their radial distances from the shaft axis. The shearing strains are related by 1 = 2 R1 R2 Using Hooke's law for shear, G=/ , we have 1/G1R1 = 2/G2R2 or (P1/A1)/G1R1 = (P2/A2)/G2R2 P1/R1 = P2/R2

Problem 326:

A flanged bolt coupling consists of ten 20mmdiameter bolts spaced evenly around a bolt circle 400 mm in diameter. Determine the torque capacity of the coupling if the allowable shearing stress in the bolts is 40 MPa. = 40 MPa R= 200 mm. n= 10 bolts d= 20 mm.

Given:

Solution:
T=PRn= ARn T= d2Rn T= (20mm)2(200mm)(40MPa)(10bolts) T= 25130 Nm 25.13k Nm

Problem 328:
A flanged bolt coupling consists of eight 10-

mmdiameter steel bolts on a bolt circle 400 mm in diameter, and six 10-mm-diameter steel bolts on a concentric bolt circle 300 mm in diameter. What torque can be applied without exceeding a shearing stress of 60 MPa in the bolts?

Given:

n1 = 8 bolts

; n2 = 6 bolts

d1 = 10 mm R1 = 200 mm = 60 MPa

;d2 = 10 mm ; R2 = 150 mm

Solution:
For one bolt in the outer circle:

P1 = A = d2 = (10mm)2 (60MPa) P1 = 4712.39 N

For one bolt in the inner circle:

P1 Rout

P2 Rin

4712.39N = P2 200mm 150mm P2 = 3534.29 N

T = P1n1R1 + P2n2R2 T = (4712.39N)(8bolts)(200mm)+ (3534.29N)(6bolts)(150mm) T = 10720 Nm 10.72kNm

Problem 330:
Determine the number of 10-mm-diameter steel

bolts that must be used on the 400-mm bolt circle of the coupling described in Prob. 328 to increase the torque capacity to 14 kNm Given: d = 10 mm

D = 400 mm = 14 kNm

Solution:
T = P1n1R1 + P2n2R2 14 kNm(1000mm2) = (4712.39N)(200mm) n2 + (3534.29N)(6bolts)(150mm) n1 = 11.48 bolts 12 bolts

Problem 331:
A flanged bolt coupling consists of six -in. steel

bolts evenly spaced around a bolt circle 12 in. in diameter, and four -in. aluminum bolts on a concentric bolt circle 8 in. in diameter. What torque can be applied without exceeding 9000 psi in the steel or 6000 psi in the aluminum? Assume Gst = 12 106 psi and Gal = 4 106 psi.

Given:

n1 = 6 bolts ; n2 = 4 bolts d1 = in. ;d2 = in. D1 = 12 in. ; D2 = 8 in. st = 9000 psi ; al = 6000 psi Gst = 12 x 106 psi; Gal = 4 x 106 psi

Solution:
T = (PRn)st + (PRn)al T = (A Rn) st + (A Rn) al T = (in)2 st (6in)(6bolts) + (in)2 al (4in)(4bolts) T = 7.07 st + 7.07 al T = 7.07(st + al) Eq. 1

(/GR)st = (/GR)al (/ (12 x 106 psi )(6in) )st = ( /(4x 106 psi )(4in))

Let

al = 2/9 st Eq. 2a

st = 9/2 al Eq. 2b
Substitute Eq. 2a to Eq. 1:

T = 7.07(st + 2/9 st) = 8.64 st T = 8.64(9000) = 77754.42 77.75 kipin

Substitute Eq. 2b to Eq. 1:

T = 7.07(9/2 al + al) = 38.88 al T = 38.88(6000) = 233263.25 233.26 kipin
