Active Steering Technology

Active steering electronically varies the steering angle of the front wheels in relation to driver input to control vehicle dynamics. It uses a motor, steering pump with sensor, oil reservoir, and electronic control unit. It senses yaw motion and turns wheels accordingly to avoid instability. It also controls lateral acceleration through steering angle and speed to prevent rollover by keeping the center of gravity height and lateral acceleration in safe ranges. The primary goal is safety through yaw stability and rollover avoidance.

11

What is active steering?

Active steering electronically varies the degree to which the front wheels turn in relation to steering input from the driver.

Controlling of dynamic stability

Basically there are 3 stability criterions can be considered as most critical Efficiency of breaking Yaw motion control Rollover avoidance

Efficiency in breaking

Case 1 Balance of torques leads to zero brake force F=0

Case 2 Mbrake- Msteer = 0 F = Fmax There is 1.6Fmax force available for

Yaw motion control

Sense the yaw motion by vehicle dynamic sensor Turn the front wheels according to avoid the yaw motion

77

Rollover avoidance
Rollover depends on two variables
1. 2.

CG height Lateral acceleration

The only variable can be controlled when vehicles moving is lateral acceleration The lateral acceleration can be controlled by steering angle and speed.

Further
The primary objective of active steering is the safety Yaw motion control and rollover avoidance can be implemented by several other approaches as EBD, Active suspension, Active differential etc.
