Knock and pause before entering the residents room. Introduce self. Identify resident. Explain procedure. Gather equipment, if applicable. Provide for privacy. Apply gloves, if necessary.

MANUAL SKILL: Assisting with Mouth Care

SKILL STEPS: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Position resident sitting up comfortably (in bed or chair). Place towel over residents chest and under chin. Place overbed table in front of the person. Adjust table height for the person. Allow person to perform mouth care. Rinse toothbrush and apply toothpaste. Encourage resident to brush own teeth if able. If unable, brush residents teeth, using gentle massaging pressure, being sure to clean all tooth surfaces, including tongue.

MANUAL SKILL: Assisting with Mouth Care

Provide water, when finished or at any other time resident requests, so that resident can rinse mouth. Hold basin under residents chin to catch water and give resident tissue or cloth to wipe the mouth. Clean and return equipment; placing toothbrush in a container that will avoid contamination and allow toothbrush to air dry. Dispose of soiled linen in soiled linen container.

ENDING STEPS: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. Remove gloves, if wearing. Position resident comfortably. Place call light within reach. Lower bed to safe position for the resident. Leave room neat. Wash hands. Document. Report abnormal findings to licensed nurse.
