Previous Knowledge
Skills & Content Knowledge about joining 2D shapes: square and rectangle as composite shapes. SQUARE RECTANGLE
Teaching-Learning Activities 1. Teacher distributes two different 2D shapes each of the group of pupils. 2. Pupils are needed to fill the column provided by teacher according to its type whether square or rectangle. 3. Teacher joins the different shapes and introduces it as the composite shapes.
Remarks/ Teaching Aids Resources/ materials: 2-D shapes(10 pieces), manila card Value: Confidence CCTS: Discovering
Any combination of 2D shapes a) square and square, b) rectangle and rectangle, c) square and rectangle
Calculate the area of the following composite 2-D shapes. Using the basic area formula: Area = Length x Breadth Examples: Shape 1 6 cm 4 cm 6 cm A B 4 cm
1. Teacher uses the same shapes and labels them individually; A and B. 2. Teacher demonstrates the calculation of the area by using given formula. 3. Teacher gives another two examples of different shapes. 4. Teacher discusses the answer with pupils.
Area of square A: 6 cm x 6 cm = 36 cm2 Area of square B: 4 cm x 4 cm = 16 cm2 Total area: square A+ square B = 36 cm2 +16 cm2 = 52 cm2 Shape 2 2 cm A 5 cm
2 cm
B 7 cm
Area of rectangle A: 5 cm x 2 cm = 10 cm2 Area of rectangle B: 7 cm x 2 cm = 14 cm2 Total area: rectangle A+ rectangle B = 10 cm2 +14 cm2 = 24 cm2
Shape 3
A B
10 cm
5 cm
3 cm
Area of square A: 5 cm x 5 cm = 25 cm2 Area of rectangle B: 10 cm x 3 cm = 30 cm2 Total area: rectangle A+ rectangle B = 25 cm2 +30 cm2 = 55 cm2 Group activity on calculating the area of the following composite 2-D shapes. A B
1. Teacher distributes shapes to each of groups. 2. Each pupils need to combine the shape according to its colour 3. Each composite shape need to be glue onto a piece of A4 white paper. 4. Pupils follow the steps to find the composite area. 4. Pupils present their work in front of the class according to its colour. 4. Teacher checks the answer with other groups.
Resources/ materials: Colour paper (2D shapes), A4 white papers and glues. Value: Independent, cooperate CCTS: Evaluating, solving
Worksheet 1
1. Teacher distributes Worksheet 1 to the class. 2. Pupils are given 5 minutes to answer the question. 3. Teacher discusses the correct answer with the pupils.
Closure 5 minutes
Area of composite shapes can be obtained by adding the area of two shapes.
1. Teacher pick a few of pupils to summarize todays lesson. 2. Teacher makes a conclusion.
