Fundamentals of Electronics EE231, Spring 2012 HOMEWORK # 1 Date due: Sunday 25th of March 2012
Exercise 1: For the circuit shown in figure 1, find the values of I and V [Hint: Having the two sources, it is difficult to say which diode is on or off. An easy way to tackle this problem is to assume that both are on, thus, fixing the direction of the currents as shown below, and then check whether the assumption is correct]. (10 marks)

Exercise 2: The input shown in figure 2 is applied to the diode circuits shown in figure 3. For each circuit, sketch how the circuit changes in each part of the input signal and draw the output waveform (Note: Show any calculations you make and label your drawings appropriately). (20 marks)

Exercise 4: Find the output voltage VO for the circuit of figure 5 . Show your work clearly. (10 marks)

Exercise 5: For the circuits in figures 6(a) and 6(b) Vm = 32 V and the PIV rating for all the diodes is -60 V. a) Calculate The dc output voltage Vdc for both circuits. (5 marks) b) Determine if the diodes of the two circuit will enter the Zener region under reverse bias conditions [Hint: Remember that the PIV rating is the voltage rating that must not be exceeded in the reverse-bias region or the diode will enter the Zener region]. (10 marks)

Exercise 6: Design the regulator circuit in figure 7 to provide a 5 V output across the load without damaging the diode. You will have to use a Zener diode with VZ=5 V and PZM = 25 mW (Note: you have to find appropriate values for R and RL). (20 marks)

Exercise 7: For the power supply shown in figure 8: a) Calculate the ripple voltage if C=100 F and RL is drawing 50 mA. (5 marks) b) Calculate the filter dc voltage if the peak rectified voltage Vm is 30 V. (5 marks) c) Calculate the ripple factor for a peak rectified voltage of 30 V, capacitor C=50 F, and a load current of 50 mA. (5 marks)
