Northampton Cooling Center Open Senior Center, 67 Conz Street Thursday & Friday, June 21st & 22nd from 10:00 am till 7:00 pm
Northampton Senior Center will be open as a cooling center to all members of the public. The national weather service has issued an excessive heat watch for Thursday and Friday this week. High temperatures in the watch area are expected to range from 95 to 100 degrees. Combined with high dewpoints, the national weather service anticipates a heat index up to around 105 degrees. Heat at this level is unusual for our area and it is important to stay cool, especially during the hours between Noon and 7:00 pm. The City of Northampton encourages anyone who is in need of a cool place to be during this heat wave to go to the senior center where there is air conditioning and water available. We also encourage everyone to reach out to elderly or disabled neighbors, friends and relatives to make sure they are safe and comfortable during this time period. Here are some facts about which people are at greatest risk for heat-related illness and what protective actions to take to prevent illness or death:
People who are at highest risk are the elderly, the very young, and people with mental illness and chronic disease But even young and healthy people can get sick from the heat if they participate in strenuous physical activities during hot weather. Air-conditioning is the number one protective factor against heat-related illness and death. If a home is not air-conditioned, people can reduce their risk for heat-related illness by spending time in public facilities that are air-conditioned.
