VALLEY SOCIAL CLUB NEWSLETTER FOR JUNE 2012

www.BHcare.org. VOLUME 34, ISSUE 6

WORDS FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE CLUB

Hi everybody ! Well summer is finally here. And you all know its my favorite time of year. ( I know I say that every year). As always May is Mental Health was a huge success. This year there was a lot to do. We had a holistic day where we all got pampered. We had the NAMI walk, a poetry contest an art show and a really nice Day of Hope celebration at the park and club. What was really super was the lunch at the armory. Instead of pizza like we always have we had the lunch catered with lots of Italian favorites. We closed the month with a cookout with the Options Social Club. Wow, you cant say that there is nothing to do at the club. We are in the process of planning summer activities so watch the calendar for updates. I hope to see everybody join us for all the fun. Julianne M.

WORDS FROM THE VICE PRESIDENT OF THE CLUB

Hope all are fine and doing well. I hope you are looking forward to summer and all the trips we have coming up at the club. The health enlightenment (Consumer Service Day) held on May 9th was great, last month. Carol B.

A NOTE OF INSPERATION
To the club members of the Valley Social Club. Im writing this article for the newsletter because this is a very special time in my life. On 5/8/87 I started my journey of sobriety. Its been twenty five years of trial and error, joy and heartache. I didn't know how I was going to do it but by attending AA meetings, God, a good sponsor and the fellowship of other People trying to stay sober it was attained. Thank you ! By Linda M.

Im glad the sky is painted blue and the earth is painted green with such a lot of nice fresh air all sandwiched between. Author Norman C Schriber. Submitted by Robert S.

EACH JOURNEY STARTS WITH A SINGLE STEP BY SYLVIA H. Ive been in the walking group since it started in February and I just love it. I try to attend each day. The people who walk are fun to be with. When I miss a day I feel I should be out there walking and I can feel it in my body when I do go. So far I have over 40 miles walked and have won a water bottle and a pedometer for achieving certain mileages. I hope to complete a 100 miles by July. Come try the walking group. Its not to late ! Youll love it!

WHY I LIKE THE CLUB

When I come to the club I sign in and wake up to a hot cup of tea in the morning. I take a quick break from the outside hassle and Im on my way out. The new big screen TV is a new great exciting tool to watch or use. By Karl B.

HOW FAR HE HAS COME AS AN ART TEACHER! Wow its been about six months since Mark O. started the VSC Art Group. He has helped about eight or more members learn how to learn how to draw. He has been a patient teacher. Many started the group with minimum ability and have gained so many skills they felt confident to put their art work in the VSC Art Show that was held May 23, 2012. Mark can see growth in many of his weekly students and they can see growth in themselves. Phyllis even took Mark to Options Social Club, our sister club in Branford for a mini exhibition of his art group for the members. The one hour art instruction went very well overall with excellent participation by the individuals attending. Mark will return for another appearance at Options in June. He has hopes to make a regular group there. Mark recently won the logo contest we held to develop a club logo to unite our clubs! He enjoyed a first place win of $25. So CONGRATULATIONS MARK!!! COMMUNITY IMPROVEMENT FOR EARTH DAY!

Our park clean up project on Friday on 4/27/12 was a big success. A good number of club members and BH care consumers responded and volunteered for this event. Trash and cigarettes butts were picked up, and the park looks clean again. Thanks to all those who volunteered for this great project giving back to the community.

ICE CREAM SOCIAL The STARS Program is launching its second annual ice cream social on Friday June 8th, from 1-2pm. at the Valley Social Club. We are serving regular and sugar free ice cream with all the delicious toppings. All staff and clients are welcome. All proceeds are being donated to the Tinney Center here in Ansonia. The Center is sponsoring free swimming classes to some of the local kids at the Ansonia YMCA. So please come support a good cause as well as treating your self to a refreshing afternoon treat. If you have any questions call Jim Cronin at ex.430.

JOHN E.LIKES THE CLUB BECAUSE ... I like to go to Valley Social Club. I use the computer a lot. I look up the news, sports and religious news. I like the lunch program and the Sober Social programs too. But what I like the most is the fellowship, people are very friendly here.

MAY IS MENTAL HEALTH WAS A BIG SUCCESS !

What a great time May is Mental Health turned out to be! We had more activities than we have ever had. and a great turn out. The week started with the housing departments Wellness Day. They brought in a aroma therapist , a nutrition expert and a massage therapist to name a few. Then we had our annual Day of Hope celebration at the social club. The day was filled with inspiration. We had our poetry contest which is a favorite every year. This year we had one of our friends Elaine N . from the Shoreline club win first place. Along with Elaine the other poets read there works to rest of the guests and at times became quite moving. A few days later we had our big Day of Hope party at the Ansonia Armory. We had Marilyn Cormack and Doreen DelBianco from D.D.S. speak about the future of mental health services in our state and being active in your advocacy. Finally we had our second annual art show at the social club. We had a lot of new artist share there works along with some of our old favorites. All in all it was probably our best May is Mental Health celebration of all time. I want to thank everyone, staff and consumers that helped out and came to support all the activities. Great job everyone ! Julianne M.

MOVING ON TO BIGGER SUCCESS BY MIKE B.

As the saying goes success breeds success. Well once again Im happy and proud to announce another success story here at the club. For the past year Katy W. has been toiling away in our kitchen helping me to prepare and serve our lunches. Well Im excited to announce that Katy will be starting a new chapter in her life. This coming fall she will be starting her college education at Southern as a journalism major. Sadly this means that she will no longer be working for us. Katy has been my most reliable and hardest working assistant chef Ive had working for me. She kept me focused and organized on the crazy days. She was also just fun to work with. So it is with a happy but heavy heart that we say good bye and good luck to Katy W.
