Circular Measure
You might learn some basic concepts regarding circle in your junior secondary years. In this topic, we are looking into different perspectives in solving some circular measure problems. Basically, we have to look into three concepts which are arc length, area of sector and area of segment. In certain questions, you might find the concept of trigonometry is useful in solving problems regarding area of segment.

Example 1
B 4 cm x A O 20cm

Find the value of x, in radians, of the sector.

Solution:

First, we have to find the angle of the major arch AB by applying the formulae, s = r .
s = r s 20 = = = 5rad r 4 x = 2 5rad = 1.283rad .

Example 2

The diagram shows a sector AOB with centre O.

A

The length of arch AB is 6.68 cm and the perimeter of the sector AOB is 30 cm. Find the value of x, in radians.
Solution:

Perimeter of sector OAB= OA+OB+6.68 30= 2OA+6.68 OA= 11.66 cm Let length of arch AB=s, s = r
6.68 = 11.66 x 6.68 x= = 0.5729rad 11.66

Example 3
B A

O D C 4 cm

In the diagram, the perimeter of shaded region is 40 cm and OD=4 cm.Find (a) the arc length AD, (b) the length of CD.
Solutions:

(a) Let the arc length AD=s,

Hence,

s = r , s = 4 x 2 = 8rad

(b)Let the length of CD=x, radius of OC=4+x, Hence, the arc length BC=2(x+4). [ By applying s = r ]
Perimeter = AD + DC + CB + BA 8 + x + 2( x + 4) + x = 40, 8 + 2 x + 2 x + 8 = 40, 4 x = 40 16 4 x = 24 x=6

Example 4 The diagram shows a circle with radius 10cm.Calculate the perimeter of the shaded region.
Q

10cm

Solution:

First, we have to find the arc length of PQ.

s = r = 10 x 2 = 5 rad = 7.85cm

Note: 900 equals to

k 2 = 102 + 102 k 2 = 200 k = 200 k = 14.14cm

rad 2

Let line PQ=k. By applying Pythagoras Theorem, we have

Hence, perimeter of shaded region=7.85 +14.14=21.99 cm.

Example 5

1.1 rad R O 14cm P

The diagram shows a semicircle with centre O. The diameter of the circle is 14 cm. Calculate the area of the shaded region. Solution: Based on the information given, POR is a diameter and a straight line. R ROQ = rad 1.1rad R ROQ = 2.04rad

1 2 r 2 1 A = x 7 2 x 2.04 2 A = 49.98cm 2 A=

Exercise:
